After a game last night in Portland, the Nets come off of that game into another tough one, this time in Denver against the Nuggets. The early NBA Odds from BetOnline have the Nets as -2 road favorites, with a total of 203 points.

Will Brooklyn be able to perform in the altitude on the second night of a back to back, or will Denver be able to overcome their string of recent injuries and get the cover as home dogs?

Lawson looking questionable

Ty Lawson has missed the Nuggets’ last seven games after breaking a rib, and even though he took part in some on-court drills recently, I sincerely doubt he is ready to come back from an injury like that. However as always, make sure you double-check his status before game time. A good time to do it would be in the morning after shoot around, and then again about an hour before tip.

Lawson being out affects not only the Nuggets’ offense, but I think it affects their defense more so. Lawson is their best defender, and without him, Deron Williams might once again have a very good game. The Nuggets have no reason to rush Lawson back. They are now eight full games out of the 8th playoff spot, and there are two teams ahead of them. While their season may not be mathematically over, it looks as if the Nuggets are lottery bound.

The Nuggets actually have even more incentive to mail it in the rest of the season. They will not only get solid lottery odds for their own selection, but they own the Knicks’ 1st round pick as well, and it’s looking more likely that will be a lottery pick as well. That gives them nearly double the odds to nail the top overall pick, which would immediately turn this team back into a playoff contender. In other words, I sincerely doubt Lawson plays tonight because of this.

The Sharp Pick

However tonight off of the back to back, the Nets as road favorites don’t interest me. The Nuggets could very easily stay with the Nets tonight, as Brooklyn is only 6-7 ATS on the second night of a back to back. Instead I think a wager on the total may be the better way to go for our NBA picks.

Even though the Nets slow the pace of the game down as much as they can, I see this game being a bit faster than most Nets games. Off the back to back, the Nuggets are going to run as fast as they can in this game, and it might lead to the Nets falling into that trap as well. With no Lawson to run the offense, the Nuggets almost have had no choice but to play very fast over their last seven games.

Brooklyn’s road defense is still giving up over 100 points per game, and coming off the back to back is not going to help that number go down tonight. On this current road trip, the Nets have cashed the over in two of their last three games. The Nuggets have an awful on defense without Lawson as well, and in their last ten games, Denver is giving up 110 points per game. Tonight I see a higher scoring game, and these early NBA Odds from BetOnline are just too intriguing to pass up.
