Defense -- or lack of it -- should determine how you maximize your NBA picks tonight when the Pacers, playing without Myles Turner, visit the Trail Blazers.

These teams are trending in opposite directions when it comes to defense, but I don’t think it’s a trend that will continue tonight. The Pacers have been pretty good on defense over their last two road games, but they were both against poor offenses.

The Trail Blazers, on the other hand, opened the season as one of the league’s better team defenses, but lately they have cashed the over in six straight games, and they have given up at least 115 points per game in their last five.

Now against one another, the question is which team will play well on that end. My thoughts are neither.

Even though I am tempted to lay the points with the Blazers, who are a team that Indiana has had trouble with in the past, I am more inclined to like the over in this one at 213, as posted on the NBA odds board. Indiana’s recent defensive upswing is not something we can bank on, especially against a Blazers team with three guys that Indiana will not be able to stop.

For my NBA picks tonight, I expect 60-plus points from the Blazers’ top three players, while the Pacers should be able to score on the Blazers’ suddenly regressing defense.
