The new look Milwaukee Bucks travel to take on San Antonio today, and Miami visits Utah in two East versus West battles. Oddsmakers have set some pretty low totals for these matchups so will we see two tough defensive battles?

It will be interesting to see how Eric Bledsoe blends with the Milwaukee Bucks. Oddsmakers have come out with what I think is a pretty low total for this matchup, but when we dig into the statistics it starts to make some sense, so for my NBA pick I will back under the total. The number to me is really surprising considering that Milwaukee is shooting 49.1% from the floor which ranks second in the NBA and San Antonio has not played up to their normal stellar defense. Currently, San Antonio is allowing opponents to shoot 46.6% from the floor which ranks 23rd in the NBA. On top of that Milwaukee is allowing opponents to shoot 47.1% which ranks them 25th in that category. San Antonio has not been shy to push some tempo this season either averaging about 87 attempts per game which is really not like the teams we have seen from this franchise over the past couple of seasons. This line looks especially off to me also considering that San Antonio has gone over this total in their last three games at home versus teams that don’t shoot the ball as well as Milwaukee. Ultimately I think this comes down the pace from opposite ends as Milwaukee is averaging just 81.5 attempts per game, and San Antonio allowing just 81.1 attempts per game which should lead them to a tough grind out type of contest.

Miami vs Utah

This is probably the most surprising line of the day considering that Utah has gone over this total their last four games, and Miami just got done putting up 126 versus Phoenix. For my NBA pick I will back under the total in this matchup because both of these teams are very solid on the defensive end despite the recent uptick in Utah’s final scores. When we start to break down the numbers we’re talking about a Utah team that is allowing opponents just 37 field goals made per game and a Miami team allowing just 37.9 ranking them fifth and 12th in these categories respectively. Neither team shoots from beyond the arc particularly well but they have been good from the interior extended. This point of contention though should be mitigated by the fact that Utah is allowing opponents just 48.6%, and Utah 47.2% on opponents two point shooting ranking them eighth and first in the NBA respectively. The tempo shouldn’t be particularly fast either so look for this game to just sneak under this low total.
