SBR professional sports handicapper Ross Benjamin has proven to be one of North America’s elite prognosticators. Ross takes a look at today’s NBA preseason game between the Pistons and Hawks. He concludes this insightful article with a free pick and some valuable betting advice.

The Pistons and Hawks will engage in a preseason contest on Thursday at Philips Arena in Atlanta. The opening tip is slated for 7:35 PM ET.

Both teams will enter tonight playing on 2 days of rest. Detroit is coming off an 86-81 home loss to San Antonio on Monday. The defeat dropped the Pistons preseason record to 0-2.

Atlanta was a 99-93 winner at home on Monday against the defending NBA world champion Cleveland Cavaliers. That victory improved the Hawks preseason record to 2-1.

Starting Centers Shine

You can’t perform much better in preseason games than Andre Drummond has done for the Pistons. Through 2 contests, Drummond is averaging 17.0 points and 17.0 rebounds per game. During Detroit’s preseason opener at Brooklyn, Drummond pulled down an incredible 21 rebounds and did so in just 24:12 of action. When Drummond is in the game, opponents need to hit a high percentage of their field goal attempts, otherwise second chance opportunities will be few and far between.

Newly acquired Dwight Howard gave Atlanta fans a small sample size of what he brings to the table and did so by virtue of his performance this past Monday. Howard scored 26 points and added 8 rebounds in that win against Cleveland. What always can’t be identified in a box score is the interior defensive presence that Howard provides.

Final Thoughts, Betting Advice, and Pick

My first bit of advice is to wager with conservative caution on NBA preseason games. There’s way too many miscellaneous factors to account for, and as a result, a higher degree of unpredictability compared to regular season games.

Neither of these teams has shot the ball particularly well thus far. Through 3 preseason games, Atlanta has shot 45.0% from the field and converted on a miserable 25.9% from 3-point attempts. Conversely, their defensive play has been outstanding, evidenced by a paltry 92.7 points per game allowed, and limiting opponents to just 40.4% shooting.

Detroit has averaged a substantially low 87.5 points per game and shot a woeful 37% from the floor in its first 2 preseason contests. Similar to last season, they’ve slowed the pace of both preseason games down to a crawl, and as a result gave up a mere 93.5 points.

I’ll have a small lean toward this game being a low scoring affair, and one of my NBA picks for this 2016 preseason will be indicative of such.
