The NBA Preseason might be a dress rehearsal for some teams, however, the Rockets have a combination of young talent and experience but are they the best NBA pick tonight against the Mavericks?

NBA Preseason Record: 3-4

Mike D’Antoni Offense

The Rockets have been scoring machines in the preseason so far and now under Mike D’Antoni one has to wonder whether this is the year the Rockets’ offense leads the league in scoring. Houston is averaging a smooth 125 points per game this preseason and because of this, the total for this one is sitting at 221 ½ points.

The Mavericks have been known to put up some high scoring games but then again there have been times over the last two seasons where you expect an easy high scoring game from this team and it turns into an 89-78 game by the end of the fourth quarter. Their last two preseason games have both been in the 100s, but that is what worries me about this one tonight against a high-pace offense.

However, the Rockets have posted a pace factor of 105.25 over their four preseason games against NBA talent, which would have easily led the league last season.

The Sharp Pick

With that in mind and with this being somewhat of a potential dress rehearsal for both teams to get ready for the regular season, I could easily see the Rockets covering this one. The Mavs’ aren’t going to play Dirk Nowitzki much even if this is a dress rehearsal, so if it comes down to the Mavs’ role players to win this game, I’m not convinced.

Both teams have not played in four days, so with the Rockets at +3 ½ dogs at 5Dimes, I am ready to take the points with the road team as my NBA pick. Dallas did well in bringing in Harrison Barnes this offseason, but I don’t see him as the consistent second scorer to Nowitzki in this offense. Even when Barnes got more opportunity with the Warriors, he never really turned into the elite scorer that he was projected as. He is a good 12-15 point per game every night and he does a lot of things well, but he has no elite skill.

The Rockets, on the other hand, are deep and talented, with a nice mix of young talent and veteran leadership. The Rockets brought in Nene, Eric Gordon, and Ryan Anderson this offseason. They have an uber-talented young big man in Clint Capela and along with an MVP candidate in James Harden, this is their game to lose if they play it tonight.
