The basketball season is upon us and the NBA champion Cleveland Cavaliers take center stage in the first game of the season hosting the new-look New York Knicks. The Cavs have been made a solid home favorite but can the Knicks keep this game interesting?

New York Knicks

Last year the Knicks went 32-50 but this year have a revamped team with Derrick Rose and new coach Jeff Hornacek.  The Knicks also picked up Joakim Noah and Brandon Jennings so the outlook of this teams is definitely brighter than years past.  Kristaps Porzingas should make even more of an impact and of course, let's not forget hall of famer Carmelo Anthony who might come into this contest with a bit of a chip on his shoulder being ranked this year at most pre-season write-ups as no longer a top tier player.  That might be partly true only to the tune that the scoring burden is no longer squarely on his shoulders thanks to a better cast of players around him.  I can understand why oddsmakers have come out making them a huge underdog in this spot having to take on the reigning champs.  But this is a decent team that looks to be heading in the right direction and should be catching a Cleveland team that might be a bit distracted opening night. Rose is a question mark tonight, but even so, I think there is value on the Knicks.

Cleveland Cavaliers

Cleveland went 57-25 last season on their way to the NBA championship and return their core of players in Kevin Love, Kyrie Irving, and LeBron James.  Possibly the most difficult aspect of this game for the Cavs is that most of Cleveland will be focused on the World Series which takes place the same time in the same city.  As well, the Cavs will go through the first game of the season after winning the championship dog and pony show.  The Cavs are better than New York hands down but the Knicks had a good pre-season and Cleveland just kind of went through the motions.  It is hard to gauge right now how focused they are on winning two in championships in a row although in all likelihood they will win the East if they stay healthy.  Still, with all the things going on around them in the first game I think the best play is to take the points.

New York Knicks vs Cleveland Cavaliers

Odds makers have Cleveland as a -9.5 favorite across the board. For my NBA pick I'm going to grab the points with New York though at +9.5 like at Pinnacle sports -105. Although it is doubtful Derek Rose will play I think this is still good value on taking New York in this spot.
