With some surprising first games behind us we can now look to see how teams react after their first game of the season. Tonight will be a tight matchup between the New York Knicks & the Atlanta Hawks.

NBA odds
NBA odds makers came out with a total of 196 for this game and it seems about right. At most sports books this is the number, and you can still get pretty good odds like at Bookmaker over the 196 at -110. For one of my NBA picks I'm going to take the over in this spot.

Atlanta Hawks
Offensively against Detroit, Atlanta scored 94 points, shot 45.1% from the field, and 29.6% beyond the arc. They only got to the line 15 times in their opener which was a bit surprising. More surprising to me was that they allowed Detroit to shoot the ball 96 times which is a pretty high pace. After New York pushed the pace against Milwaukee I expect for Atlanta to be prepared to run with the Knicks.

Defensively against Detroit the Hawks allowed 106 points, 38.5% shooting from the field, and 41.4% from beyond the arc. Again, what surprised me was simply the pace that Detroit imposed on Atlanta. I wasn't too surprised by the outcome because I did back the Pistons in that game, but of course I don't think this one game will be an indicator to what we can expect from Atlanta. They definitely will need to hit the boards better though as they got outrebounded 59 to 40.

New York Knicks
Against Milwaukee, New York scored 122 points, shot 45.2% from the field, and 39.1% beyond the arc. I don't think I was the only person surprised to see New York handle Milwaukee like they did in the opener. There is still a long season ahead but maybe the Knicks will actually do a little something this year in the East. I like how they kept up the pace shooting the ball 93 times and I expect them to do the same tonight against Atlanta.

Defensively New York allowed 97 points, 34.9% shooting from the field, and 50% shooting be on the arc. Overall they seemed to have played pretty decent on defense but when I look at Milwaukee's personnel offensively there is not a ton of offense there. Although New York played an all around nice game the fact that Milwaukee shot 50% beyond the arc should be a bonus to Atlanta tonight.

With Atlanta needing to bounce back from their first loss of the year and New York coming in pretty confident after their win on the road I like for both these teams to put up a lot of points tonight. For one of your NBA picks I suggest backing the over in what should be a fun up-and-down, and closer than anticipated affair.
