We crashed & burned last night in our NBA Picks, but the law of averages says that tonight we should bounce back in a big way. I've found two more NBA Picks for this large Wednesday slate.

Heat vs. Hornets
Both these teams have staked their claims in the Eastern Conference through 20 games or so, and both look like solid playoff contenders as we approach the quarter mark of the season. The Heat’s most recent loss is somewhat concerning, but overall their defense has been superb, as they play at a slower pace to help the veterans and skillsets on that squad. Tonight they face off against the Hornets in Charlotte, and the Hornets come in as a +1 ½ underdog at home, with a total of 192 points.

While it looks like Luol Deng might make his return to the lineup tonight for the Heat, the Hornets have quietly started the season as one of the better-kept ATS secrets. Charlotte is 11-8-1 ATS this season, and after being one of the worst offensive teams in the NBA last season, a few tweaks have them as a top 10 team in both Offensive and Defensive Rating. With the exception of taking their turn getting beaten down by Golden State, in their last four games sandwiching that loss, they have held their opponents to an average of less than 90 points per game, and if they can bring that same defense tonight, I like them as home dogs.

The Heat have been very impressive, however, they have started the year with five road games compared to 14 home games. They have not been tested on the road that much this season, and with the Hornets still a rather undervalued and under the radar team, I am taking the point and a half here with my NBA Pick. The only two teams Miami has beaten on the road this season were Minnesota and New York.

Rockets vs. Wizards
Another early start game I have my eye on tonight is the Wizards playing host to the Rockets, as Washington comes in as a -3 favorite on the SBR odds board, with by far the highest total of the night at 215 ½. Both of these teams play very fast, and a night after the Rockets lost on the road to the Nets, they might give up some points to the small-ball Wizards.

Even with Washington hurting at the big man position, they should get Marcin Gortat back tonight after he had to go to Poland to be with his ailing mother, Kris Humphries returned to the lineup in their game Monday, and Drew Gooden might have a slight chance of playing this one too. Washington will potentially have the size to throw at Dwight Howard, and with the Wizards’ backcourt playing well, I am laying the points with the Wiz Kids.

Washington has been forced to play super-small over the last few games, but for the most part it’s been working well. It worked last season in the playoffs too, and with the faster pace they’re playing at, they need to go small and shoot early in the shot clock. Washington plays for turnovers and the fast break on defense, and against a tired Rockets team that’s giving up more turnovers than any other team outside of Philadelphia, it means tons of John Wall and Bradley Beal in transition tonight. Washington averages about 104 points per game against the Western Conference this year, and I expect even more than that tonight against a poor Rockets team defensively.
