Thanks to a big second half from the Spurs, and absolutely no defense from the Bulls last night, we easily cashed our two NBA Picks for the short-slated Monday night.

Spurs vs. Pistons
We have reached the dog days of January. I have seen two straight days of snow, the players in the NBA are starting to get tired, and it’s probably the toughest stretch of NBA to predict until we get to the All Star Break. However, tonight the Spurs come off their win last night against the Nets to play the Pistons, and the NBA Odds have the Spurs as -7 favorites in this one, with a total of 194½.

Since the Nets have been playing so badly, I thought that Gregg Popovich was going to sit some of his veterans against the lowly Nets last night, but everyone played until the fourth quarter when the Spurs went on a run to win the game easily. Tonight there is always a danger of some Spurs sitting out, but San Antonio needs every win they can get to keep pace with the Warriors. Only Kawhi Leonard hit he 30-minute mark last night so they should have no problem playing everyone again here this evening.

However, what does that mean for this game? Spreads are getting increasingly tough to predict, but the total for this game seems like the safest way to make some money tonight. At only 194, these two teams could easily get into a classic January defensive battle where neither teams scores much more than 90 points. The Spurs have already been very good cashing the under on the road this season. They easily cashed last night to move their under record to 11-5-1 this season on the road, and against the Eastern Conference this season, the Spurs are giving up a league-low 88 points per game after last night.

On top of that, the Pistons have been quietly good on defense this season, coming into this game with a Defensive Rating of 99.8, good for 8th best in the league. Of course the Spurs are head and shoulders ahead of the rest of the league in DRtg at 93.4, so don’t expect too many points tonight. Detroit is giving up fewer than 97 points per game at home this season, and even though they are cashing the over at home at 10-8 this season and in nine of their last 12 at home, the Spurs’ defense should clamp down on Detroit to cash the under tonight as the NBA pick.

Cavaliers vs. Mavericks
Lebron James and Dirk Nowitzki may be a few years older and have a few more titles between the two of them since their epic 2011 NBA Finals matchup, but tonight they play one another once again, and the NBA Odds have the Mavs as +6 home dogs, with a total of 198½. The spread has stayed steady since it opened, and while I’m tempted to take points with Dallas, the total presents a much more interesting wager.

At 198½, the total has dropped a full five and a half points since it opened last night at 204, and while that normally means we need to tail the sharps moving the odds down, I am going to be a maverick with the Mavericks tonight and go with the over.

Even though the Cavs have cashed the under in eight of their last 11 and even though the Mavs have cashed the under at 7-1 in their last eight, these two teams have the ability to score the ball with the best of them.

In their last five games, the Cavs are averaging more than 113 points per game, and in their last ten games the Mavs are at an average of 104 per game, while giving up almost 102 in the process. Also, against the Eastern Conference this season, the Mavs are giving up 103 points per game. While I am definitely going against the trends in this one, take the over tonight. The NBA Odds have moved down enough to make cashing the over a real possibility in this one, so while I am definitely being contrarian with this pick, I think it can pay off tonight.
