We have reached Sunday in the NBA, and there are starting to be some really good games on Sunday nights, as the NFL is slowly moving towards the offseason, basketball is just starting to get interesting.

NBA Picks: Suns vs. Mavs

2012-2013 NBA straight picks record: 64-46-4

I have several picks going in the NBA tonight, and my final one for the evening is the Suns traveling into Dallas to play the Mavs. Dallas is a -7 ½ NBA odds favorite in this one, with an over/under of 201 points. Both of these teams are coming off a loss to the Spurs, so which one will avenge their last loss tonight against one another?

Phoenix went hunting

Even though there was some controversy about overlooking qualified assistant coaches, the hiring of Lindsey Hunter as the head coach in Phoenix was a good move on the part of the Suns. Hunter is 2-1 so far as the head coach, and the Suns’ offense seems to have some new life coming out of it.

Even though their defense still stinks, ranking in the near bottom of the league in almost every category, if the Suns can come together on offense, and utilize the unique set of talent they have this season, they will not end up one of the league’s worst.

Tonight, against the Mavs however, the Suns will likely have little to no answer for Dirk Nowitzki. They will likely try a number of different defenders on Dirk, including Michael Beasely, Markieff Morris and possibly Luis Scola. However, none will likely have an effect, so will the Suns sell out to stop everyone else on the Mavs? As of late, that has gotten to be an even taller order.

Slowly, but surely

It has been slow and somewhat tedious, but Nowitzki’s return to the court has turned the Mavs into a viable opponent on any given night. Although he hasn’t quite yet returned to form, Nowitzki is playing well in January. He still isn’t close to last season’s 21 points per game, but in January, he is still averaging 16 points despite shooting only 42.7% from the floor and 78% from the free throw line. Both of these are WAY off his normal numbers.

It just takes a lot more time for a 34 year-old to recover from even a knee scope than it does a 22 year-old. Dirk will once again regain his form, and for after the All Star break, he is a prime candidate to break out to his old self. Against the Suns tonight (a team that he normally torches for 20 points or more) could be his break out game for this season.

The Sharp Pick

Although I can’t wait for it, I don’t think Nowitzki is going to torch the Suns into covering 7 ½ points tonight. These two teams aren’t much different from one another, besides the fact one team has one of the greatest of all time, and the other has no super stars.

I think Phoenix is the play for your NBA betting this evening, even though they are coming off a back to back. The flight from San Antonio to Dallas takes all of 15 seconds, so I don’t think the back to back is going to have too much effect. I do think the Suns will play solid enough on Dirk to get the cover though. I just feel like Dallas is slightly overvalued tonight.
