NBA Picks: Suns at Grizzlies Betting Analysis
The lowly Phoenix Suns (16-32 SU, 10-12-2 ATS away) will take their game on the road this evening, but it won’t be easy because they have to face the number one defense in the league, as they will attempt to get a rare win on the road when they meet up with the Memphis Grizzlies (30-16 SU, 15-9-1 ATS home), who will look to continue its dominance on their home court.
Tip off in this one is scheduled for 8:00 PM EST from the FedEx Forum in Memphis, Tennessee and can be seen live on television, with local broadcast coverage provided by Fox Sports Arizona and SportsSouth.
As to be expected because of this lopsided matchup, the early NBA betting odds are offering Memphis at -8 ½, while the game’s total is sitting at just 183 ½ points, which makes sense given the Grizzlies stellar defense and lack of ability to score points.
The Suns continue to struggle as they come into play tonight having lost two games in a row and four of their last five, falling by an average of 13 ½ points in those matchups. Additionally, they have notched just one victory in their last eleven games against teams from the Western Conference when playing on the road.
Their poor play has resulted in one of the worst straight up records in the Western Conference this season.
They are also disappointing us bettors lately, covering the point spread just once in their last five games overall; and going up against the Grizzlies, the results are much of the same, as they are only 1-4-1 ATS in their last six meetings versus Memphis at the FedEx Forum.
The Suns are shooting 44.4% from the floor and scoring an average of 95.6 points per game, both of which rank 19th in the league. However, their defense surrenders 100 points per game, which obviously will not get the job done in this league and is the main reason the losses are starting to stockpile.
The Grizzlies defense continues to be the cornerstone of the team, as their 89.5 points against average is tops in the NBA this season.
However, they are a poor offensive team that shoots just 43.5% from the floor (25th) and scores about 93 points per game (27th). Great defense or not, they definitely need to improve on the offensive side of the ball.
While Memphis has had good success against the spread when facing teams from the Pacific Division lately (5-1 ATS in their last six), they are only 1-4-1 ATS in their last six games played on a Tuesday.
As expected, because of their stellar defense, Memphis is under in 14 of their last 19 games played at home and 20 of their last 29 overall. Meanwhile, Phoenix is over in three of their last four games played on the road, but under in 8 of 12 following a game where they failed to cover the point spread.
Besides clearly being the better team, Memphis is tough to beat at home – not to mention the Suns have only won four road games all season. For these reasons, we will be adding the Memphis Grizzlies to our NBA picks, expecting them to win and cover the point spread.NBA Picks: Grizzlies -8.5
