The Utah Jazz and San Antonio Spurs continue to struggle past the quarter point of the NBA regular season. Will one of these teams be able to use this game as a springboard to a hot streak and play to potential?

The Jazz has this contest and will at Oklahoma City Monday night. Utah is 2-2 SU and ATS this year when playing with two days' rest, winning by an average of 4.5 PPG.

This will be the second contest of a six-game homestand for San Antonio. They won in the back end of a home and home with the L.A. Lakers Friday 133-120. The Spurs are 8-4 (7-5 ATS) at home, but are a rotten 5-9 ATS (7-7 SU) with one day between games, losing by 5.4 PPG.

[/]{"component": "embedHTML", "code": "

Started off the weekend and the homestand with a big W. #GoSpursGo pic.twitter.com/cjPjRuiyzH
— San Antonio Spurs (@spurs) 8 de diciembre de 2018
\n\n"}[/]

The NBA odds are expected to very tight and with that in mind let's break down each club.

Jazz Notes

After scuffling for most of November, Utah won their last two contests of that month and are on a small 4-1 SU and ATS run. What has changed for the Jazz? Getting everyone healthy and committed to defending.

If you excuse Utah for permitting 121 points in the third game in four nights, in their other most recent seven outings, they have allowed just a tick past 100 points. Compare that to their season average of 107.2 PPG conceded and you start to imagine coach Quin Snyder's team could put together a nice run looking ahead.

With Donovan Mitchell back at full strength, the Jazz has multiple ways to score and a deep bench. If the defense comes to play, Utah will give nearly anyone trouble.

Spurs Small Talk

Since starting this season 6-2, San Antonio is 7-12 (8-10-1 ATS). Spurs players have openly voiced their frustration about not catching any breaks and having bad luck, but the numbers say something else.

For decades, Gregg Popovich nightly sent out one of the best defensive teams in the NBA. He's not able to do that anymore. San Antonio is 25th in points allowed and 28th in both field goal percentage defense and three-point shooting defense. The commitment by the players is not there and neither is the quickness, with the bulk of the players on the floor in their 30's. This could have worked several seasons ago, as older teams would slow the pace and force opponents to play there style. But with the game a three-point shooting contest or drives to the rim, the Spurs roster is not equipped to defend.

On the season San Antonio allows 114 PPG and in their last eight contests, the Spurs have been bludgeoned for 125.5 PPG.

The Outcome

San Antonio just played at Utah on Tuesday and was clobbered 139-105. On Friday, the Spurs were back home and got revenge on the Lakers who they also lost to this week and I'm looking for the exact same outcome Sunday for making NBA picks.

San Antonio is 7-1 ATS at home against teams with winning road record and Utah has seldom played well in the southwest with a 7-20-1 ATS mark at San Antonio. The Spurs execute revenge again.

Prediction: Spurs 115, Jazz 108
