The Golden State Warriors made a huge move in signing Kevin Durant in the offseason.  Today they take on the best franchise of this generation in the San Antonio Spurs to kick off the NBA season.  Oddsmakers have made the Warriors a solid home favorite in the NBA odds but can the Spurs stay within the number?

  San Antonio Spurs

Last season the Spurs ranked first in the league allowing just 92.9 points per game and first in opponent effective field goal percentage. Of course, the big news is no Tim Duncan this year but what might affect the outcome of tonight's game is no Danny Green. This is a very interesting team with a solid foundation but I think to open the season this is a tough spot for them to come in and lock down a team that will most likely lead the league in scoring this year. Look for Popovich to get a feel for the makeup of Golden State and start making plans to find a way to beat them in the playoff but tonight they will probably have to take their lumps. I have a hard time believing they will contain Golden State the entire game so unless the shoot lights out they will probably lose by double digits.  As the season continues though they will be right there with the Warriors, just not tonight.

Golden State Warriors

Last season the Golden State Warriors average 113.3 points per game which ranked them first in the NBA. For them, the big news is picking up Kevin Durant from the Oklahoma City Thunder which has made expectations for the NBA championship or bust for this franchise. There will probably be a little bit of a learning curve but so far in the preseason the Warriors have been humming along. What I mentioned several times last year, and what sometimes gets left off about this team, is they are one of the best defensive teams in the NBA. Last season Golden State ranked second just behind San Antonio in opponent effective field-goal percentage. With everyone healthy tonight it looks like it'll be a fun opening game for them and although oddsmakers have made them the strong favorite I see no reason for them not to be able to win this game by double digits considering the spot.

Final Analysis

Oddsmakers have Golden State as a -9 favorite across the board and for my NBA pick, I'm pointing to back them minus the nine like at Pinnacle sports -105. I expect these two teams to be in a tight race by the end of the year but tonight it should be all Warriors.
