Last season the Rockets launched to a big victory over the Knicks at Madison Square Garden but can they duplicate their efforts tonight in our NBA picks?

Houston Rockets (5-4 SU, 3-5-1 ATS)

Shooting guard James Harden has been hobbled with injury all season and is a game time decision in tonight’s contest in New York. However, in his absence former Knick Jeremy Lin has picked up the slack and none more so than a stellar 34 point performance last night in a losing overtime effort, as six point road chalk in NBA odds, to the Philadelphia 76’ers.

After jumping out to a 4-1 record and shooting almost 50% from the floor while averaging over 109 points per game the Rockets have nosedived to averaging 104 PPG on 43% shooting. Defensively they have not been strong even during their early season winning streak and have struggled even more over their last six games, during which they have gone 2-4 straight up and a money burning 1-5 ATS.  Despite their defensive lapses Houston has plenty of firepower in their lineup and bang the boards with the best of them. They are averaging 48.1 rebounds per game (ranked 1st) and are currently the third best scoring offense in the league.

New York Knicks (3-4 SU, 3-4 ATS)

After getting walloped by the Spurs 120-89 on Sunday night, the Knicks took a plane out of the Big Apple and jetted on down to Atlanta last night where they got a big game from Carmelo Anthony en route to a 95-91 victory over the Hawks as six point underdogs in NBA odds. Last season’s Sixth man of the Year award winner J.R. Smith got an unexpected start over Pablo Prigioni and the unusual move paid off for head coach Mike Woodson. Smith drilled three 3-pointers in the opening quarter to help the Knicks move out to a 29-24 lead. However, it was not going to be easy as New York watched a 17-point lead unravel only to hold on to the four-point road victory.

The Knicks have dropped their last three at home and have lost by an average of 15 points during that time. Their defense has been woeful, allowing an average of over 110 points per game in this three game home stretch. The Knicks big man Tyson Chandler continues to sit with a fractured fibula and will not be available to handle the Rockets monster in the middle Dwight Howard. This should further compound the huge disparity in rebounds between the teams with Houston ranked 1st and the Knicks a cellar-dwelling 29th. New York will have to put a blanket over Dwight Howard if they are to have any success at home this evening.

Free Pick:

Both teams played last night so neither side will have an edge in terms of rest. However, the Rockets must be dragging after a double overtime victory against the Raptors followed by their overtime loss last night to the 76’ers. James Harden will probably be out but if he does suit up will be far from perfect.

However, the advantage in rebounding and the fact that Houston has dominated the Knicks in recent memory, winning eight of their last night at MSG, has to figure in what should be another victory for the visitors. But, as we know, it’s not that easy when you factor in the all-important point spread. As of this writing very few books are dealing the game at all but those that are have the Rockets as 3 ½ point favorites in NBA odds. That’s simply not enough for us to back the home dog so we will cast our fortunes with Dwight Howard and the visiting Rockets.
