The favorite has covered the spread in six consecutive meetings between the Houston Rockets and Memphis Grizzlies, as the two teams prepare to meet at FedExForum Friday night.

Let’s take a closer look at the NBA betting odds for this Western Conference matchup, with the opening tip scheduled for 8:00 p.m. ET.

Bad situational spot

Houston went 5-2 on its recent seven-game home-stand, which ended with a disappointing 100-91 setback to the Indiana Pacers as 5.5-point favorites Wednesday night, while going UNDER the total for a seventh consecutive contest.

The Rockets hit the road for this contest, but they’ll return to the Toyota Center to play two games against the Los Angeles Clippers and Orlando Magic.

Battling for the No. 4 spot

Memphis has split its last 10 games, which has caused it to drop to the No. 5 spot in the Western Conference standings, as it looks to bounce back from a 108-101 defeat to the New York Knicks as one-point road favorites Wednesday night.

The Grizzlies will certainly be motivated to close the 2012-13 NBA season in strong fashion, considering the fourth seed has the opportunity to host at least one playoff series

Success in this series

NBA handicappers will find that the Rockets have won 11 of the last 15 meetings in this series, but it’s important to note that they’ve dropped their last four trips to Memphis.  The underdog is 0-6 against the spread (ATS) in its last six games in this series.

Houston earned a 121-96 blowout victory in the last meeting as one-point home favorites on Dec. 22, which happens to be the highest point total that Memphis has given up all year.

Century mark

There’s no question that the Grizzlies are going to be a difficult team to face in the upcoming playoffs due to their defense, as they’ve held 60 of their 71 opponents under 100 points this season, which is the highest number in the league for that particular category.

The Rockets are averaging just 96.2 points over their last five games, while the Grizzlies rank second in the NBA in surrendering just 90.0.

I’m going to recommend that readers back the Grizzlies as one of their NBA picks against the spread, as they’ve gone 61-31-1 ATS versus teams that average 99 or more points the last two-plus seasons.

NBA Pick: Memphis Grizzlies -5 at Pinnacle
