Two teams in different positions – and unfamiliar with those positions – will try to move forward so that they don’t fall into a rut. This is the best game on the NBA betting docket for tonight.

The Washington Wizards Can Win Because…
Their defense is up for the challenge. Washington is sixth in the NBA in defense, heading into Friday night’s game against the Oklahoma City Thunder. Paul Pierce has made the Wizards a more cohesive defensive team, and the experiences gained in last season’s march to the second round of the NBA playoffs have also given Washington a level of toughness that some basketball analysts weren’t quite prepared to expect. This team is not just about the open-court virtuosity of John Wall or the three-point shooting of Brad Beal. It’s a cohesive, functioning whole, and although head coach Randy Wittman is not regarded as one of the best coaches in the league, he has truly kept this team together and deserves some credit for what’s happened with the Wizards this season.

The Wizards could also win because San Antonio is just not right – not yet, at least. The Spurs have been dealing with a lot of injuries this season, but they’ve failed to win a lot of close games, including and especially overtime games. This team cannot find any consistency, and that’s why it is 3-7 in its last 10 games. The Spurs could be good later in the season, but they’re just not that good right now, and that’s why Washington can go into San Antonio and walk away with a good result.

The San Antonio Spurs Can Win Because…
They've still managed to win 20 games this season, despite all their problems, and their statistical profile is in many ways better than the Wizards’ numbers. San Antonio is 12th in the NBA in offense, while Washington is 18th. San Antonio is 10th in the league in rebounding, Washington 13th. The Wizards’ average point differential is plus-2.8 points, but the Spurs’ point differential is plus-3.5 points. San Antonio has not been playing well enough to win at a higher rate, but the Spurs have not been bad. They’ve been experiencing the wrong side of a lot of small margins. This team is still capable of doing great things and going on a big run in the middle months of the season.

San Antonio is 11-5 at home, which is not brilliant by any stretch, but is still solid on NBA betting odds lines. Washington is 8-5 on the road, which is okay, but it’s not nearly as good as the 14-4 record the Wizards have compiled at home.

One other factor to consider: San Antonio will have had two days of rest for this game. The Spurs’ bodies figure to be fresher than they’ve been in quite some time.

The rest the Spurs will get for this game should really help them out. San Antonio’s win over Houston this past Sunday should also enable the Spurs to play with the confidence they need to win. Take San Antonio with your NBA picks.
