The Los Angeles Lakers are coming off of a huge victory over D-12 and Houston as they reach the .500 mark and now find themselves traveling to New Orleans to square off against Anthony Davis and the New Orleans Pelicans.

Bet 365 Sportsbook lists the NBA odds for New Orleans at a rather high 9 point betting favorite and the total for the game is listed at 200.5.

Can L.A. pull off another miracle without their superstar Kobe Bryant? Stay tuned.

Reaching the Next Level

Anthony Davis might not have won the Rookie of the Year Award like people had expected him to, but his progress from year one to year two has been mindblowing. This is a player that can wear his unibrow proudly as he’s turned into one of the best players in the NBA and in such a short period of time.

Davis leads the Pelicans in 4 major categories, averaging 21.2 points, 11.4 rebounds, 2.2 steals, and 4 blocks per game. The Pelicans are a team on the rise with top level talent. This is a team that is so secure at the guard position that Tyreke Evans, who can start for any other team, is coming off of the bench.

The acquisition of Jrue Holiday has tightened things up offensivley so much and in return Holiday has had to sacrifice some of his numbers for the good of the team; this isn’t Philly.

Even coming off of a 99-84 victory over a tough Memphis team, the young Pelicans still have a lot of maturing to do, but the upside is so great. When Ryan Anderson returns from the tragic death of his girlfriend, this team could be a playoff contender with that much needed bench support.

Necessary

Every team needs that journeyman that brings the experience to a team that’s in need of stability and Steve Blake does just that for the Los Angeles Lakers.

Blake broke the heart of Dwight Howard and the Houston Rockets fans last night as the Lakers were trailing by 2 points with seconds to go and Blake hoisted up a 3-ball and nailed it to give the Lakers a much needed victory.

This was a game that Los Angeles was winning most of the way, relinquished the lead down the stretch, but Blake took back the lead for good. You can put Blake in your “Steve Kerr” category of players.

Last night was an exceptional night for Blake. Aside from the game winning shot, Blake was 3 for 7 from 3-point range for 9 points.

Jordan Hill

One thing stuck out watching last night’s Laker game; the dramatic improvement of Jordan Hill. Although Nick Young led the Lakers with 21 points and 3 steals, it was Hill that was making the crucial plays and hitting the big shots down the stretch. This is a player that can turn into a legitimate force in the league in the future.

On the other end of the spectrum, Los Angeles used to be stock piled with talented big men and now it’s just veteran Pau Gasol. Gasol had a terrible game last night against Houston and without Kobe Bryant on the court, he should be the go to guy. Look for Gasol to redeem himself tonight after such a poor performance in Houston.

Outcome

I love the Lakers coming into this game after such a big last second victory over Houston. Los Angeles has a lot of role players, but collectively, they can stay in this game and 9 points are way too much to lay for your NBA picks.
