NBA Picks; Jazz vs. Clippers
Two teams that actually had the night off on Friday hook up this evening in LA, as the Jazz come into the Staples Center to play the Clippers. LA comes into this game as a -9 favorite, with a total of 197.
Utah Stands Pat
Rumors were swirling all over the Jazz at and before the trade deadline, but Utah held onto both of their excellent big men who both have expiring contracts. Sitting in the 7th seed out West, with three other teams within 2 ½ games right above them in the standings
The Jazz have been awful on the road this season ATS, only covering in 10 of their 28 road games so far in 2012-2013. They are 2-4 SU in their last six road games, as well as being 2-4 ATS in that stretch
They will get a chance to make a big statement tonight, this time on the court as they face an LA team above them in the standings. Even though the Spurs blew out the Clippers the other night, LA just got fully healthy thanks to a much-needed All Star Break, and that loss to San Antonio might have just poked a sleeping bull
Utah will have to be playing at an elite level tonight to even think about getting a win, but the cover is much more likely in my book. Currently a small majority of bets are coming in on Utah, which pushed the NBA odds line down a point from +10 where it opened
The Clippers lost by 26 to the Spurs at home this past Thursday, and now they get a chance at redemption tonight against Utah. LA has won five in a row against the Jazz including three already this season. However, two of those wins were by one and two points, while the other, LA won by 11.
You can probably guess that the two close wins were in Utah, and the Jazz obviously got the cover both times. Nine points whichever way you look at it is a tough one, so once again, I’m siding with the total in this one, which sits at only 197 points.
The Sharp Pick
The Last five times these two teams have played from Staples Center, the total has gone over. The Clippers have also averaged over 100 points in those five games. To top it all off, the Clippers are one of the best home scoring teams in the NBA, averaging 103 ppg in Staples this season.
While the Jazz are an average defensive team this season, they do not bring that same effort on the road with this season. The Jazz give up almost 102 points per game when playing on the road this season.
Obviously you have to take into account that the Jazz don’t score very well on the road, (96.4) as well as LA being good defensively to begin with. However, in their three games and losses against LA this season, Utah has averaged 105 points per game in those three.
All in all, the Clippers will be mad and ready to play up-tempo tonight after getting embarrassed two nights ago. 197 is a few points too low.
