NBA Picks: Hornets vs. Rockets
So far, I’m doing ok with my single game picks, although those trustworthy citizens on the message boards will have you think other wise.
Tonight the Hornets travel into Houston to duel with the Rockets, and as the NBA Odds opened up last night, the Rockets found themselves favored by a large -9 ½. One of the reasons why they are favored by so much is because the Hornets played last night, but could not get over the hump against the Hawks. It was a poor shooting night for New Orleans. So, will they be able to right the ship tonight against a powerful Rockets team or will Houston put up too many points for the offensively challenged Hornets?
Rockets playing better
James Harden has been a great addition to this team. Harden is going to get his no matter what, and he has shown that he is pretty good at scoring the ball. However, the other Rockets are the ones who will determine whether this team makes a push to hold onto a solid playoff seed or not.
Two key Rockets have to continue to show up and play well for this team to be a playoff team. Jeremy Lin and Omer Asik both have to play well every night for this team to be a consistent winner. While they might not be doing it every night, the Rockets are starting to get a bit more consistent. Houston has won six of their last eight games going into tonight.
Lin is a no brainer. He has to contribute for the Rockets to win. He has been doing such things recently, and has provided a nice second option behind Harden. Asik is doing what everyone thought he could do last season when he was with the Bulls. When given the minutes, Asik is an elite post defender and rebounder, and his shot blocking and offense is coming along MUCH quicker than I thought it would, and I saw him play for two seasons for my team.
Eric Gordon made his return from over a year layoff over the weekend, and while he has only played two games, the Hornets are 1-1 SU with him in the lineup, while they were 6-23 this season without him.
If Gordon can come back to where he was when he was healthy, the Hornets just went from an offensively challenged team to a not-so offensively challenged team. Gordon is a great shooter, passer and slasher, three things the Hornets were desperate for.
They still aren’t very deep, but with Anthony Davis, Gordon, Grevis Vasquez and guys like Ryan Anderson, this team has started some great building. Once they come together on offense, this is going to be a very good ATS team for our NBA picks in the future.
The Sharp Pick
For tonight’s game, both teams have are in full health, so there is no wildcards we have to account for in regards to players being out or worse, a game time decision. This game pits together one of the NBA’s best offenses against one of the worst, and if last night is ay indication as to how bad the Hornets are on offense, (86 points) the Rockets will run right over them. Although I do think they will eventually be a good bet in the future, that is not going to happen tonight. The Rockets are playing well right now, and I expect their defense to pick it up a bit. This is the Hornets fourth game in six nights, and I don’t think they will be very energized after last night.
My Pick: Rockets -9 ½ at The Greek
