There are plenty of great games on this evening, but one of the bigger ones has to be the defending champion, Miami Heat heading into Brooklyn to play the new-look Nets. The NBA Odds for this one favor the road team at -3 ½ with a total of 194. Will Brooklyn go hard tonight to get the upset, or will Miami bounce back from their awful loss to the lottery-bound Sixers.
The Heat came off of their big win against the Bulls on opening night and then put up a stinker against the 76ers on Wednesday. The Heat were down 23-2 at one point early in the game, and the young 76ers did not let up, winning the game outright. We have seen this before from Miami, and their lack of early season focus has cost them some wins before. While that one loss will not kill their chances of being the #1 seed in the East, it’s concerning for the Heat to say the least.
Tonight against the Nets, the Heat should have no problem getting up for the game. The Nets have basically become the new look Boston Celtics, and I’m sure there is plenty of bad blood remaining. For tonight, the Nets are going to have to play better than they did in their opener. Brooklyn only shot 40% from he floor in that game, and Joe Johnson and Deron Williams combined 5-16 shooting in the game. This has to improve if the Nets want to win this game. However if it makes you Nets fans feel better, I don’t think there is going to be a lot of scoring in this game to begin with. This should be a defensive game with plenty of hard fouls and no easy buckets.
The Sharp Pick
Miami has covered ATS in their last three games against the Nets for our NBA picks, as well as six of the last seven. Brooklyn/New Jersry has lost their last ten games in a row SU to the Heat, and I’m sure this is the biggest Nets game since the Nets have come to Brooklyn, (yes it’s bigger than the 1st round of the playoffs last season).
The last three meetings between these two teams, and four of the last five meetings overall have gone under the total. I think this could be the trend we need to follow into tonight’s game. Early season rust is showing for a lot of teams, and the Nets especially are showing it. Even though they were on the road Wednesday, they probably should have won the game against the Cavs, a likely 1st round playoff matchup for the Nets.
The under seems like the play here. Both of these teams are top ten defensive teams, and nothing brings around the defense more than a rivalry game. Even though their offense is going to be a work in progress under first-year head coach, Jason Kidd, the Nets’ defense should be solid in this game and for the season. Brooklyn’s defense should be good enough to hold down the Heat some here, and vice versa, the Heat should be tuned in enough to play better defense than they did on Wednesday.
My Pick: ‘Under’ 193
