Although you might think this will be an up-tempo affair between the Heat & Hawks, this game matches up two good defenses. The total is a bit too high in my opinion so I will be backing under.

NBA odds
Across the board NBA Odds makers have this game at 196.  That is just too high in my opinion.  You can still get decent odds at under this number at Heritage Sports -105.  For my NBA total pick of the day I am going to back under 196 in Miami.

Atlanta Hawks
The Hawks have averaged 99.2 points per game, 45.2% shooting from the field, and 32% from beyond the arc.  After getting upset by Detroit they are starting to resemble what we would expect from them.  On this end of the floor they are very efficient, but tonight I think they will have some difficulty against a well coached defensive team in the Heat.

Defensively Atlanta has allowed 98.2 points per game, 39.4% shooting from the field, and 35.2% shooting from beyond the arc.  Their shooting percentage allowed is one of the best in the league ranking fourth, but they are lacking a bit in defending the perimeter.  Overall though they will be one of the better defensive teams in the East by season's end, they know championships begin and end on that side of the ball.

Miami Heat
Offensively Miami is averaging 101.7 points per game, 47% shooting from the field, and 42.9% shooting from beyond the arc. Their shooting has been phenomenal this season and they lead the league in shooting from distance percentagewise. They have a lot of solid weapons and will be a formidable team to face against this season. They have a good combination of veterans and young guys like Dwayne Wade and Hassan Whiteside.

Defensively Miami is allowing 95 points per game, 41.8% shooting from the field, and 25.9% shooting from beyond the arc. This a very good team and getting out and defending the perimeter, and they know exactly where they are supposed to be when it comes to assignments. They rank third in the NBA in three point field-goal percentage and are just an overall solid unit on that side of the ball.

Although both of these teams have some good offensive weapons, they are both founded in solid defensive principles. This total is just too high for this game and look for both teams to play very hard on the defensive end and limit good looks. For one of your NBA picks I suggest backing under the total when the Hawks visit the Heat.
