Defensively both the San Antonio Spurs and the Los Angeles Clippers know what they need to do to stop the other team in this crucial game 7.  I think they do just that so I am taking the under in this game.

The Number
NBA odds makers have come out with this number at 204.  I thought that was a bit low after the previous games in this series and the overall pace.  But upon looking at the stats deeper I like the way the Clippers are playing defense right now and I think they will do a solid job in limiting the Spurs and controlling the tempo.  As far as the game goes, to me it looks like a coin toss, but I think both teams will step things up defensively to give themselves the best chance to win.

Hidden Defense
?For most of the series it seems like these teams have gone a lot of up tempo.  But actually they are shooting at about the same clip that they both have all year.  On the year these teams combined averaged 167 shots per game, in the last three they have averaged 166 yet have been scoring more averaging 212 points compared to their season average of 209.  This is due to a lot of factors and can fluctuate a lot.  Still, offensively combined they have been playing over their averages compared to their norm like fast break points, shooting percentage, and free throws attempted.  Actually that last one is the big one, and sure has a lot to do with the hack a Jordan but still, on the year combined they averaged 47.2 attempts per game, in the last three of this series though they are averaging 64 attempts.  I don’t think this trend continues today.

The Clippers have surprisingly played the better defense for the most part of the series. I think they will be tough to beat at home today, but more importantly they usually play better defense at Staples (6th ranked defensively at home in opponent shooting percentage). They also should control the tempo.  I am looking for a real dogfight today and it has me taking the under with my NBA picks.
