The Lakers have dropped their last eight games while their LA neighbors the Clippers have won and covered three of their last four. Let’s review the NBA odds and cash a ticket.

Los Angeles Lakers (9-39 SU, 20-27-1 ATS)
The Lakers are not only losing outright but are punishing those who have included them in their NBA picks as well. After suffering eight consecutive defeats the Lakers have covered the NBA odds in just two of those contests. In their last outing they were crushed by the Bulls in Chicago by the score of 114-91 as 8½ point road dogs. Kobe Bryant has announced he is retiring at the end of the season but it looked as though he already had after his listless performance last night. Bryant managed just 10 points on 4-of-13 shooting after taking the night off in the team’s previous game with the Dallas Mavericks.

Power forward Julius Randle grabbed 8 boards and 14 points while point guard Jordan Clarkson led all LA scorers with 16 points. It has been a miserable season for this storied franchise and it is illustrated in their team statistics. The team is near the bottom in both points scored (96.1) and points allowed (106.4) and dead last in assists averaging 18.4 per contest. This is a team that needs just about everything though they are getting to the glass better than virtually anything else they have been doing this season. The Lakers are hauling in 42.9 boards per game good for 18th in the league.

Los Angeles Clippers (30-16 SU, 22-21-3 ATS)
The big news has been Blake Griffin breaking his hand upon the face of an assistant trainer. But the bigger news perhaps is just how well the Clippers have been doing without his services for the past month. The Clips have gone an astounding 13-3 straight up and 12-4 ATS. The team anticipated Griffin’s return from a quad injury just about now but his most recent and well-publicized injury has him out for the next four to six weeks. Head coach Doc Rivers has done a stellar job of keeping the Clips competitive and using different combinations to fill the void that Griffin has left.

In the team’s last outing they won a defensive battle down in Atlanta against the Hawks 85-83 as 5½ point road dogs. This has been a different kind of team without Blake Griffin and the rumor mill has swirled that the Clippers may indeed unload him before the trade deadline. The Clippers are averaging 104 points per game which ranks them 7th in the league while allowing 100.6 points per contest placing them 13th in that category.

Betting Analysis
Both clubs are at home but technically the Clippers are labeled the home team against their co-tenants the Los Angeles Lakers. It is quite a turnaround from years’ past when it was the Clippers that were the laughingstock of the league. The shoe is most definitely on the other foot now and the Clippers have owned the Lakers over the past three seasons with an 8-1 straight up mark. But the point spread is there for a reason and that’s when this intra-city rivalry becomes interesting. The Clippers still hold the advantage but it is a 5-4 ATS mark versus the dominating 8-1 straight up record.

In their only meeting this season the Clips dribbled out with a 94-84 victory as 12½ point chalk which means those who backed the woeful Lakers actually cashed a ticket. This time the score won’t be nearly as close. The Lakers are playing terrible basketball even for them while the Clippers are enjoying ripping off wins despite the absence of their co-resident superstar Blake Griffin.
