NBA Picks: Clippers vs. Magic; One Will End Losing Streak
The Los Angeles Clippers (34-16 SU, 11-14 ATS away) will be on the road this Wednesday evening to face the Orlando Magic (14-34 SU, 8-16 ATS home) in a matchup that features two teams looking to snap out of their respective funks.
This game is set to tip off at 7:05 PM EST from the Amway Center in Orlando, Florida and can be seen live on television, with local broadcast coverage provided by Prime Ticket and Fox Sports.
The NBA odds list the Clippers as -6 point favorites on the road in this one, which seems to make sense, given the uncertainties both teams are dealing with, as injuries continue to be a problem. For anyone looking to add a play on the total to your NBA picks, it will be your decision to go over or under 188 points.
Los Angeles Clippers
The Lob City Clippers have hit a stumbling block, losing three straight games and seven of their last ten overall. During that span, they haven’t been too good against the spread either, going just 2-8 ATS in their last ten contests.
Part of the reason the Clippers are playing so poorly is because they have been without superstar point guard Chris Paul for nine games now due to a knee injury; and it has become evident they need him back in the lineup, as they are only 2-7 SU in his absence. Also, the Clippers might be without Blake Griffin in this one as well, as he is listed as day-to-day after suffering a hamstring injury just a few days ago.
The news keeps getting worse for the Clippers. They have covered the point spread in just one of their last seven games played on the road and are winless at 0-5 ATS in their last five versus Eastern Conference opponents.
It is obvious the Clippers are in a funk, but could a matchup against the lowly Orlando Magic be the cure for them to get back to their winning ways again?
Orlando’s losing streak has reached double-digits, as they have now dropped ten consecutive games. They are also losers against the spread during that span, as they have covered the point spread only once in the last ten matchups.
The Magic, who have also lost 21 of 23 are also an injury-plagued team, as they are missing Arron Afflalo (calf), Jameer Nelson (forearm) and Big Baby Davis (foot). Needless to say those three players are key assets on the roster and major contributors for Orlando.
There is a silver lining in all of this for Orlando, as they have had success against the spread when playing the Clippers. In fact, the Magic are 9-1-1 ATS in their last 11 matchups against the Clippers, including a 4-1-1 ATS record in their last six when the game is being played in Orlando.
That said, Orlando has failed to cover the point spread in four straight games played at home and seven consecutive after one day off between games.
The Clippers are over in 15 of 19 coming off an ATS loss; while the Magic have eclipsed the total in 18 of their last 26 games overall. Orlando is also over a staggering 32 of their last 51 games played at home.
The Clippers lost outright (98-90) to the Washington Wizards just two nights ago as -3 point favorites, so it is certainly within the realm of possibility to think Orlando can beat them as well.
However, we cannot lose sight of the fact that the Clippers are a first place team and a perennial contender in the Western Conference, while the Orlando Magic have become totally irrelevant and are seemingly headed for a lottery pick.
Lay the chalk with the Clippers in this one, as they will get back to their winning ways with a straight up victory and point spread cover against the Magic tonight.
