The fans, the bettors, even the NBA was surprised when the Charlotte Hornets made it into the playoffs while the Brooklyn Nets again faltered. Both teams made huge adjustments coming into this season and oddsmakers have taken notice as we can see by the line movements in the NBA odds.

Charlotte Hornets

Last season the Charlotte Hornets made it into the playoffs only to lose in the quarterfinals to the Miami Heat in seven games. This year oddsmakers do not expect for them to be nearly as good putting their NBA odds at nine games under where they finish last season. It makes a little bit of sense looking at the fact they lost Al Jefferson and Courtney Lee, along with Jeremy Lin. However, they do bring back leading scorer Kemba Walker as well as a good core of Marvin Williams, Nicholas Batum, and a healthy Michael Kidd-Gilchrist. They also, in place of Jefferson, picked up Roy Hibbert who will help them on the defensive end and on the glass but not so much in the scoring column. For me, this comes down to a couple different X factors which include head coach Steve Clifford and the depth of their bench. It's hard for me to think this team will be nine games worse because these X factors are solid and that Clifford is one of the most underrated coaches in the game and their bench is actually decent with Jeremy Lamb and Frank Kaminsky, who I think will have a breakout year. This total is simply too low so the recommended NBA pick is over.

Brooklyn Nets

Last season Brooklyn was arguably the worst team in the NBA winning 21 games and picked up point guard Jeremy Lin in the off-season. It's kind of hard not to like Lin but oddsmakers have still set Brooklyn right at where they were last year and I believe this total is about right. So can they be a couple wins better than last year? I highly doubt it as they simply do not have a very good roster and head coach Kenny Atkinson is not a miracle worker. While some pundits think the Nets could actually improve, and they do have a very good center in Brook Lopez, I just don't see them being any better than last year so I believe the smarter play is on the under. They're going to be counting on guys like Trevor Booker and Rondae Hollis-Jefferson to step up along with Bojan Bogdanovich and play big roles and big minutes which I don't believe will fare well for this team. Essentially what we have with Brooklyn is a team of role players having to play starting positions. While they might pull off some upsets here and there playing with a bit of a chip on their shoulder it's hard to believe they will be able to win consistently enough to even get 20 wins.
