Few people would have believed it at the beginning of the season but as we hit the middle of December, the Minnesota Timberwolves only have one more win than the Boston Celtics. If the playoffs were to start today, Boston would be in while Minnesota would be out.

Nonetheless, the two teams square off in Boston on Monday night in a very intriguing matchup.

The Minnesota Timberwolves can win because…

They have a bit of momentum going. They’ve won three of their last four games with the only loss coming on the road in San Antonio. That’s respectable.

The difference between the two teams is merely the conference. Minnesota has more talent and more developed talent. Kevin Love and Ricky Rubio are All-Stars while Kevin Martin, Nikola Pekovic and others provide an excellent supporting cast. The Celtics are still young and developing. Had they found themselves in the Western Conference instead of the weakest division in basketball (where no opponent has a better winning percentage than .409), they’d only have a handful of wins.

Minnesota is 7-3 ATS and SU against teams with a losing record. That goes to show you that they are not as bad as their record indicates.

The Boston Celtics can win because…

They’ve been respectable at home while Minnesota has not been a good road team. Do you really want to lay points with the T-Wolves know that they have a 5-8 road record while the Celtics are 6-6 at home? On top of that, people who make their NBA picks need to be conscious of the fact that the Timberwolves are in a back-to-back on the road situation and are also playing their third game in four nights.

The C’s have won four of their last five at home and should cash again on Monday.

Outlook & Pick

The Timberwolves have not been a very good team since starting the year 7-4. While they impressed in the first couple of weeks, they’ve struggled since as they’ve’ lost six of 10. They’ve also lost six of their last nine on the road.

Boston is a young team that’s gaining confidence by the day. Since starting the year 4-10, they have won seven of 11 and now lead the Atlantic Division. They deserve more respect on the NBA odds than this, so I’ll take them plus the points with my sports picks.
