The NBA regular season tips off in Boston as the Celtics welcome their divisional rivals, the 76ers. Let’s see what the NBA odds makers are offering and start the season off with a winner in our NBA picks.

Philadelphia 76ers (0-0)
The 76ers have been the NBA’s doormat for two seasons running as they have won a combined 37 games over that time span. But the selection of third overall pick and former Duke Blue Devil Jahlil Okafor teamed with the 2013 number one pick in the draft Nerlens Noel could make for a formidable duo for years to come. Noel was injured in his rookie season and acquitted himself well in his sophomore campaign. But now he has another talented big man alongside that could begin to change the fortunes of the franchise.

Philadelphia currently has only nine players who are a definite go for tonight’s meeting with the Celtics. The injury bug has bit and bit hard as Nik Stauskas’ (leg injury) status is in question for tonight. In addition, Robert Covington (right knee), Joel Embiid (foot), Carl Landry (wrist), Kendall Marshall (knee) and Tony Wroten (knee) are all out for this one. The Sixers will be playing short-handed but still hope to improve upon their 81-65 drubbing on Friday night to Boston.

Boston Celtics (0-0)
Though Boston had a losing record (40-42) they still managed to cop the seventh seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs last year thanks in large part to a late surge that saw the team go 24-12 down the last leg of the season. They were dismissed in a four game sweep at the hands of the Cleveland Cavaliers but the postseason experience can be nothing but beneficial for a team that is youth driven and poised to improve upon their previous campaign.

This season the Celtics have new additions to the roster and some late season acquisitions that proved to be pleasant surprises for the Green. Guard Isiah Thomas and defensive specialist Jae Crowder are the players that contributed mightily to the turn of events late last season and now they will enjoy the company of veterans Amir Johnson and David Lee formerly with Toronto and Golden State respectively last season, who were plucked by the Celtics in the offseason. The Celtics wrapped up their preseason with a 6-1 straight up record and seeks to continue the momentum in Boston tonight.

Betting Analysis
The Celtics are facing a short-handed Sixers ball club and had no problem handling this team less than a week ago on a technically neutral site in Manchester, New Hampshire. Those that included the Green in their NBA picks last season were rewarded as Boston wrapped the season with a 49-36 ATS record which includes the postseason battles with the Cavaliers. Boston is clearly a team that is on the rise and their play in the preseason illustrated that this is a club that has taken all that good mojo from last season’s end of year run and channeled it into this year’s edition.

The NBA odds makers opened this game up making the Celtics an 8 ½ point favorite but that line has spiked to 11 ½ in most shops. That jump makes this a tougher call because Boston should make short work of this beat up Philly crew and win by double digits but will the C’s get disinterested come garbage time? I don’t think they will as this is the season opener and a lack of enthusiasm is unlikely. Here are a few stats to consider:

The Celtics are 7-1 ATS in their last eight vs. the NBA Atlantic Division.

The Celtics are 7-3 ATS in their last 10 games overall.

The 76ers are 0-4 ATS in the last 4 meetings with Boston.
