The Clippers and the Warriors are the two hottest teams in the NBA right now. When they meet in Los Angeles, which team’s hot streak will come to an end and who’ll cover the NBA spread?
The Golden State Warriors Can Win Because…
They are playing extremely well, and when the team with the best record in the NBA plays extremely well, it should be expected to win any game it plays. The Warriors have won nine games in a row. There’s very little they’re going wrong at the moment. That point differential which has shown how consistently dominant the Warriors have been keeps rising. It is currently at plus-10.9 points, almost at 11. It would be remarkable for Golden State to get there, and the Warriors are so close to doing that.
It’s not hard to see why Golden State is where it is. The team blew out the Memphis Grizzlies on Friday in Memphis, and the Griz had been the second-best team in the Western Conference for most of the season. Golden State’s two best players, Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson, were unstoppable against Memphis. They combined to hit 22 of 39 field goals for 66 points. Curry had 38, Thompson 28. You’re not going to beat Golden State when the Splash Brothers are on top of their games. The Warriors hit 16 of 31 threes, which is ridiculous. They assisted on 28 of their 39 made field goals, which is also an amazingly high rate of efficiency.
Golden State was also great on defense as well against Memphis. The Warriors’ frontcourt held the Grizzlies’ best players, Zach Randolph and Marc Gasol, to 8 of 20 field goal shooting (4 of 10 for each player). Memphis committed 19 turnovers, the same number of its assists. Memphis scored just 35 points in the second half, failing to hit 20 points in either the third or fourth quarter. Golden State is just a monster right now, and no NBA team is matching what the Warriors are doing.
The Los Angeles Clippers Can Win Because…
They are extremely hot as well, and tonight NBA odds lists them as a 2-point favorites at home. Clippers are definetly lending some credence to the idea that if any team is going to be able to stop Golden State, it’s them. Los Angeles has won seven games in a row. It’s true that the Clippers are playing a lot of weak teams, but you have to then acknowledge that the Clippers aren’t sliding by. They’re crushing other teams. They beat Boston by 13 on Sunday. They beat Philadelphia by 21 on Friday. They won by 31 against the Knicks in the game before that. They handled Washington by 14 a few days earlier. This team is getting production from a lot of sources. Austin Rivers led the team in scoring against the Knicks. J.J. Redick led the team with 27 points in the win over Boston. It’s great news that this team isn’t needing Chris Paul to be the leading scorer – he shouldn’t be if this team’s offense is running properly. The Clippers can truly keep pace with Golden State in a scoring contest, and with DeAndre Jordan averaging over 16 rebounds in his last five games, the Clippers will be able to limit Golden State to one shot at the offensive end.
The fact that the Clippers are on a big roll makes this game interesting they are still just 15-20 ATS this season against teams with a winning record. The teams they’ve defeated recently – Charlotte, Sacramento, Washington, New Orleans, New York, Philadelphia and Boston – are mostly cellar-dwellers or are slumping. Golden State is a completely different animal. Take the Warriors with your NBA picks.
