One of the NBA’s best up and coming rivalries is the Celtics and Sixers. Two or three years ago the Sixers were the laughing stock of the NBA, and now they have become an Eastern Conference contender. That level of emotion will play out Tuesday night in defense.

Opening night is a special time for NBA fans, signaling that we don’t have to pretend to like football anymore! Hoops are back, and we’re not afraid to tell you football degenerates where you can shove your Saturday and Sunday afternoons!

Elite-Level Defense, October-Level Rust

The Celtics and Sixers had two of the league’s top four defenses last season. They both held their opponents to effective field goal percentages of less than 50 percent and they both ranked inside the top five in defensive rating.

They played four times during the regular season and the only one of those games to go over the total was the NBA London game at a neutral location. Their playoff battle was a different story, but we are far from that point right now.

Not only are these two teams still very good defensively, this is the first game of a new season. You never see too much rust, but you do see a lot of teams start the season a little out of rhythm offensively.

The Celtics are going from beating the Sixers without their two best players, to now having to reintroduce both Kyrie Irving and Gordon Hayward to the offense. These two guys have not played in a real basketball game for months. The chances of one or both of them being off to start the season are pretty high when they both had surgeries to recover from.

Add in the adrenaline of it being a national TV game and the first one of the season, and the total of 208 for this one is simply too high.

[/]{"component": "embedHTML", "code": "

We're back at full strength tomorrow night to open up the 2018-19 season. pic.twitter.com/sO78AW8QcU
— Boston Celtics (@celtics) October 15, 2018
\n\n"}[/]

The Sharp Pick

Early-season under plays are always a good bet during the first three to five games of the NBA season. As much as the preseason prepares these guys to play in regular season games, the speed and level of defense increases dramatically once the regular season begins.

Defense in basketball is majority effort. Sure, there is plenty of skill involved, but anyone will tell you that it is at least 51 percent effort. At the beginning of the season in the first game of the year, none of these guys will have tired legs. With this being a rivalry game, both will want to show out on that end of the floor.

Last season Boston opened the year cashing the under 5-1 in their first six games and 10-4 in their first 14 games. Considering Philly was the second game of the year for the Celtics in 2017, I could see a very similar outcome this time around. Boston won that game 102-92 in Philadelphia.

Boston had a 102.9 defensive rating at home last season, and they are going to try and slow down the Sixers as much as possible. The more half-court offense the better for an under play at 208 for this game. Especially if Boston plays at a pace of 97 possessions per game like they did at home a year ago.

If the Celtics can force the Sixers to play that style and not let them run too much in the open court, take the under and hope for a sloppy, defensive, and intense game between two young rivals.
