The Lakers and their young core are playing a lot better this season than most people probably anticipated. Tuesday they host Oklahoma City, and oddsmakers have the game with OKC at -2.5. Can the Lakers get revenge on the Thunder for an early-season 113-96 loss?

Oklahoma City Thunder

The Thunder are 8-6 on NBA picks and are averaging 105.3 points per game. Of course without Kevin Durant they are not quite as intimidating as they were last season, but with Russell Westbrook leading the charge they will still be one of the better teams in the Western Conference.

Oklahoma City has been doing a lot of damage in the paint, using the low post and attacking the rack and averaging 48.6 points per game -- which ranks first in scoring in that area. Offensively, the Thunder are starting to pick up the tempo in averaging 88.8 attempts per game, which ranks second in the league, and across the board offensively they have been decent shooting 44.8% from the field, ranks right in the middle of the NBA. They like to get out in transition and hit the boards as they rank third in total rebounds.

Tonight, I think the Thunder might have a little bit of trouble in Los Angeles due to the fact they have struggled a little bit on the defensive end. OKC allows 44.5% shooting from the floor, which ranks 14th in the league. They are also allowing a lot of up-tempo with opponents getting up 87.2 attempts per game.

Los Angeles Lakers

Los Angeles has lost its past two games to San Antonio and Chicago, but coach Luke Walton has done a tremendous job with this squad and it is averaging 109.8 points per game, which ranks second in the NBA. Offensively, they have a nice flow and their statistics are extremely good as they shoot 47% from the floor, which ranks third in the NBA, along with an effective field-goal percentage of 52.6%, also ranking third.

The future definitely looks bright for this club, but unless they start playing some better defense they will not pull off many upsets this year. Los Angeles ranks in the bottom of the league in many defensive statistics, including second to last in opponent effective field-goal percentage and dead last in opponent overall shooting percentage. That being said, the Lakes have defended the perimeter quite well in allowing opponents to shoot just 32.7% from distance -- ranks fourth in the league. Although they will need to improve on the defensive side of the floor, with the way they score and their overall belief that they can beat anybody leads me to backing them tonight on NBA odds.
