Our NBA handicapper checks out the current futures odds for the NBA Championship and spots a team worth a long shot bet. Follow the money!

With the NBA preseason underway, the 2016-2017 season long prop odds have started to come out for us to review. Many of our top rated sportsbooks offer these futures odds, such as 5Dimes and Bovada.

Now, with both the Cleveland Cavaliers and Golden State Warriors standing pat or just flat out getting a better lineup, the futures odds for these teams winning the NBA Championship are a bit ludicrous. You’d be better off waiting until they make the playoffs and betting every game they play on the moneyline. Bovada currently has the Cleveland Cavaliers at +300 to win the championship, while the Golden State Warriors can be found at an insane -125 to win it all.

For the most part, these NBA odds allow us, dreamers, to get a huge payout should we be able to select a longshot to win it all. There are more than a few years where this occurred, and I can only think of an injury happening to Stephen Curry or Lebron James that would be a reason why it is more than likely to occur again. As with any NBA team, really, if one of your top 3 players goes down at the wrong time your chances are pretty screwed.

But for any long shot bet, let’s start with what’s possible, as in picking a team that has a really good shot at making the playoffs. For my NBA pick, I would like to focus on a team that could also get hot from the outside and negate any mismatches defensively with a big man. Look no further than the one and only Portland Trailblazers, who can currently be found at +7500 to win the NBA Championship.

The thesis for this pick is simple. The Trailblazers should definitely make the playoffs this year, with a mix of young talent in the backcourt and the addition of big man Festus Ezeli from the Warriors over the offseason. They are deadly from the outside with Damian Lillard, CJ McCollum, and swingman, Evan Turner. Any team that can get blistering hot from 3-point land can be a threat in this league and win on any night. The team is also relatively young, so a step forward by any contributor, like CJ McCollum last year, would be huge in increasing their chances.

Then there is also the fact that the Blazers, and Microsoft money-owner, Paul Allen, is willing to throw whatever money it takes to win. They awarded $320 million in new contracts over the offseason and are going to have a huge luxury tax bill in 2017-18 to pay should all of the players they have on the roster get paid the contracts they have now. Money can’t buy you everything, but sometimes they buy you championships. And if you take the Trailblazers at 75 to 1 and they win, you’ll have some money to buy whatever you want too.
