Five of the eight playoff spots in the Eastern Conference are set while the bottom of the pile battle for the three remaining spots. Here’s a look at the lay of the land for your NBA picks.

Boston Celtics punch playoff ticket

We now know five of the eight teams that will be making an appearance in the postseason as the Boston Celtics became the fifth team to punch their playoff tickets this week. This leaves three spots at the bottom of the table up for grabs, and that race is well and truly heating up.

Milwaukee Bucks continue to ride roughshod over the Eastern Conference table, making top seed billing an almost certainty as well as winning the Eastern Conference, a bet priced at +160 with BetOnline.

How the Bucks remain in plus-money is incomprehensible. Granted on the merit of strength of schedule down the stretch they have a tougher road to travail than their nearest rivals and threats Toronto Raptors (priced at +250 with BetOnline to clinch the East). However, the Bucks have the best record in the league at 56-19 SU, underscored by a 9.5 winning margin on average.

For those that fancy more stats –the Bucks are at a 75% winning ratio while the Raptors have a 69% winning ratio on account of a 52-23 SU record and a 5.4 winning margin on average. Current form is strong on both accounts – the Bucks have won three straight and boast a 7-3 SU record in their last ten games while the Raptors are 6-4 SU in their last ten games.

Simply put, if everything remains the same – in that both teams continue on the same vein of form and trends – there is absolutely no way the Raptors can close the four-game gap. That can only happen if the Bucks somehow lose out the last seven games or so of the season.

Race at the bottom of the pile heating up

Current standings (as of March 28th) have the Hawks, Bulls, Cavs, and Knicks well and truly eliminated from the playoffs. Leaving 15 teams in play for the postseason, six of which are mired in a battle for the bottom three seeds – this includes the Nets (38-37 SU), Pistons (37-37SU), Magic (37-38SU), Heat (36-38SU), Hornets (35-39SU) and Wizards (31-45SU).

To say the Wizards’ playoff bid is hanging by a thread is most generous. Their form is a woeful 4-6 SU in the last ten games and it is really just a matter of a few games and some math before they can be officially eliminated. Put another way, they are six games off Orlando with just seven or so games left on the season.

The Heat and Hornets are still in the race, trailing by a few games from eighth-placed Magic, seventh-placed Pistons and sixth-placed Nets. This makes this section of the playoff race rather intriguing. From here on, every game is going to be a must-win game to keep playoff hopes alive.

It is worth noting, that the Hornets, Heat and Magic are playing some great basketball down the wire while the Pistons look to be floundering on a 4-6 SU record in their last ten games and a worrying three-game losing streak.

Charlotte have won four straight and boast a 6-4 SU record in their last ten games while Orlando Magic have won six straight and boast a 7-3 SU record in their last ten games. Miami Heat are coming off a loss to the Orlando Magic, a 99-104 loss at home that did put a slight damper on their playoff bid, but they are a healthy 6-4 SU in their last ten games.

The way the Magic have been playing right now, one would think the Bucks would rather avoid them in the first round of the playoffs. The Magic seem to be brimming with confidence and if they were to remain as the eighth seed come playoffs, they could give Bucks a run for their money.

As it stands, the Pistons need to be worried. Form is headed in the wrong way and if that trend continues both Miami Heat and the Charlotte Hornets might fancy their chances of squeaking in.
