NBA power rankings update Western Conference
With the exception of the top three teams, basically the entire rest of the Western Conference is still in contention with the exception of just a few teams. After a week off for the Christmas holiday, let's take a look at my updated power rankings and see how much they differ from two weeks ago in the Wild Wild West.
1. Oklahoma City Thunder (24-7 SU, 17-12-2 ATS 1st in West Standings)
It's two weeks later and the Thunder still haven't slowed down in the West. They are still cashing at a great rate and still leading in the Western Conference. Although Oklahoma City still has to be considered the favorite out West, the gap is narrowing between them and the rest of the conference. The Spurs and playing great basketball, and the Clippers still look like solid Western Conference title contenders. However the Western Conference title is going to Oklahoma City this year, and I expect them to stay at the top of my power rankings for the definite future unless something major happens.
2. San Antonio Spurs (26-8 SU, 21-12-2 ATS, 2nd in West standings)
Just percentage points back in the West standings right now, the Spurs are nice winning streak and are threatening to take over the top spot in the West from the Thunder. Tim Duncan is playing like an ageless wonder, and the rest of the Spurs supporting cast are helping Timmy carry the load. The only thing I worry about with the Spurs team is them breaking down. We have been writing them off at certain points for years now, but there will come a time when this team becomes over the hill. I hope it's no time soon, but we have to keep in the back lines.
3. Los Angeles Clippers (25-8 SU, 20-13 ATS, 3rd in West standings)
Just a few more percentage points back of the Spurs and the thunders sit the Los Angeles Clippers. This team's accomplishments this season keep on rising, and while I still have my reservations about their ability to have extended playoff success, this team could very well be the number one seed in the West at the end of the season. If they can stay healthy and show that they have the ability to play solid half-court basketball, I will be a 100% believer in their abilities.
4. Memphis Grizzlies (20-9 SU, 17-11-1 ATS, 4th in West standings)
Just another half step below the top three teams in the West that the Memphis Grizzlies. Although I think Memphis will fall outside of the top three by seasons end, there is no reason to believe that they should couldn't be able to beat any of the above three teams in a playoff series. They've proven they can beat one of them already, and the Grizzlies always play the Clippers and Thunder well. While their depth is a bit of a concern, they are clearly one of the top four teams in the West and should stay there throughout the season.
5. Golden State Warriors
6. Denver Nuggets
7. Houston Rockets
