Both the Celtics and Pistons are coming off of games versus two of the best teams in the NBA. Today they meet in Detroit, the NBA Odds for this game have the Pistons as small favorites, are they worth a bet?

Boston Celtics

Boston and comes in averaging 106.3 points per game but allowing 105.8 points per game which rank them 20th in the league in scoring defense. On the season they are not getting up and down the court as quickly as they did last year averaging just 85.5 attempts per game which rank 20th in the NBA while allowing opponents to get up 86.5 attempts which rank them 15th. Last season they were at in the top of the league in tempo and I expect for them to get back to that style as the season continues. Statistically across the board on the offensive side, they have still been sound ranking sixth and  10th in effective field-goal percentage and shooting efficiency respectively. As well, they still move the ball around quite efficiently averaging 24.5 assists per game. On the other side of the ball their transition defense has been good, however, they are currently hovering around the middle of the league in most offensive statistics. Coming off a back to back and taking on arguably the best team in the NBA yesterday will not make this road trip very easy.

Detroit Pistons

Detroit is 5-0 at home this season winning every game by double digits and I expect for them to continue their success today. This season they have relied a lot on their defense as offensively they have controlled tempo and not pushed the pace so much. In fact, Detroit ranks last in the league in three-pointers attempted and made per game.  That being said it is the defense that is got them to hang in so far this season without their starting point guard, and at home, they have been spectacular. Defensively Detroit is allowing just 96.9 points per game which rank them fifth in the league. More impressively they rank third in the league in opponent two-point shooting percentage and opponent shooting efficiency, and they rank fourth in opponent effective field-goal percentage and overall opponent shooting percentage. They will have their hands full today against a pretty efficient Boston squad but across the board, Detroit ranks in the top 10 in most defensive categories and I look for them to win this game by more than five points.

NBA Odds

Oddsmakers have Detroit as a -3 home favorite across the board. For my NBA pick I will back Stan van Gundy and the Pistons tonight who have proven to be a very tough team playing at The Palace.
