Kawhai Leonard & Greg Popovich

Today the Rockets and Spurs meet in San Antonio. The NBA Odds makers have made San Antonio a solid road favorite. Can James Harden and the Rockets keep this close?

Houston Rockets

Currently sitting at 4-3 on the season the Rockets are averaging 108.9 points per game while allowing 107.9 ranking them fifth and 22nd in the league respectively. So far they have been very efficient scoring the basketball ranking first in the league in both effective field goal percentage and efficiency. They also have been shooting the three like crazy averaging 35.6 attempts and 13.4 made from distance, both which rank first in the NBA. The issue for them, as we can expect with a D'Antoni team, is their lack on the defensive end. The Rockets rank in the bottom third of the league in most defensive categories highlighted by ranking 25th and 27th in opponent shooting efficiency and effective field goal percentage respectively. Tonight I believe they will be well challenged on the defensive end by a very good defense in the Spurs that is also efficient on the scoring end. Don't look for the Rockets to put up the kind of points they will need to keep this one close.

San Antonio Spurs

The Spurs come in with a 5-2 record and are coming off a 116-92 drubbing by the hands of the Los Angeles Clippers.  We had the Clippers in that game specifically because San Antonio was coming off a back to back but they should be well rested for tonight's contest. On the season statistically they are not where they were last year but we are only a couple weeks in and I expect them to start to put the clamps down on teams defensively. Currently they rank first in the league shooting 40.3% from distance, but their overall offensive statistics are pretty pedestrian ranking in the middle of the league in most offensive categories, and surprisingly dead last in points in the paint. On the other side of the ball they have been good at controlling tempo ranking 7th in opponent field goals attempted per game, but again more in the middle of the league in defensive efficiency. Still, I like their personnel and look for them to start to put more emphasis on their defense.  Look for them to make things difficult on Houston and for themselves to be very efficient scoring tonight.

NBA Odds

Odds makers have the Spurs as a -7 favorite across the NBA Odds board.  For my NBA pick I am going to take San Antonio minus the points and look for them to play their best game of the season. They should win this game by double digits.
