Right now in the offseason future odds, there are several teams that are very under or overvalued. While I believe there may be more value than inflation, I have identified three teams that are either somewhat, or drastically overvalued. Let’s take one of our final offseason looks at the NBA future odds before the NBA preseason starts. All of these odds are courtesy of Bet365.
Houston Rockets (+1100)
Right now, the Rockets are higher on the odds board than teams like the Clippers and Warriors, and tied with the Spurs at 11/1. While it’s more due to the Clippers and Warriors being undervalued, the Rockets are not that much better than both of the aforementioned California teams. Houston has the LA Lakers of a season ago written all over them, and while I doubt they will crash like LA did, they also will be hard pressed to finish 2nd in the West.
I do think the Rockets have this price’s potential, but they need to trade off Omer Asik, and in return bring in some picks, and a nice veteran or two. Asik’s value will never be at its peak backing up Dwight Howard, and they would have a lot of options on who they could bring back in a trade like that. I think the potential is there, but it’s not there yet. They are still missing at least one big piece.
Denver Nuggets (+4000)
Even though I love the hire of Brian Shaw, this team has some big problems heading into the 2013-2014 season, and even though their NBA odds price is close, I think it is taking last season into account too much. Andre Iguodala is now in Oakland, and Danilo Gallinari is going to likely miss the first couple of months of the regular season after tearing his ACL just over 5 months ago.
After a season of scoring at will, the Nuggets may be very overvalued this season, and it will stem from their inability to score the ball. Without Iggy and Gallo, that’s over 30 points per game lost. Ty Lawson’s offensive skill set is not yet where it needs to be, and neither is JaVale McGee’s. There could be some serious scoring lapses with this team in the upcoming season, and I’ll go as far as to say their spot as a playoff team is in serious jeopardy.
Utah Jazz (+12500)
Okay, I know, a team that’s 125/1 is overvalued? I think they definitely are. There are several teams 200/1 and over that will be better than the Jazz this season, and after an offseason where they lost half of their team, it’s going to take some time in Utah. Their future sports betting odds now would indicate they are just out of the playoffs, where I see them as potentially one of the three worst Western Conference teams.
They will be lead by a rookie starting point guard, which is going to take some time. Trey Burke is far from Damian Lillard’s level, and after taking on the salary dumps of Andris Biendrins and Richard Jefferson, the Jazz have basically said to the league they are tanking, and they are going to try to be bad. They will play well on some nights, but along with the Suns and Kings, I don’t think the Jazz are definitely not better than any of the other 12 teams in the West. Avoid them in your NBA picks.Join the discussion on the upcoming 2013-14 NBA season on SBRForum's basketball message boards!
