Different styles collide in Memphis when the Houston Rockets come to visit. Both the Grizzlies and the Rockets are playing their second game in two nights and odds makers have made this line tight. Which team will have the advantage in this offense versus defense?

Houston Rockets

Houston comes in averaging 114.5 points per game which rank second in the NBA and has completely revamped their offense season. They also rank second in the league in effective field-goal percentage and shooting efficiency as well as shooting 55% on their two-point shots. With James Harden at the point head coach Mike D’Antoni has turned Houston into an offensive juggernaut as they continue to pour in points at an exponential rate. Their shooting percentage numbers are only enhanced by their tempo as they average 87 attempts for a game which ranks them sixth in the NBA along with attempting and making the most three-pointers per game at 40 and 14.8 respectively.

However, with D’Antoni and his high-powered offense, you’re going to get a lack of defense and that’s what we have seen from Houston this season as they rank 19th and 20th in the league in opponent effective field-goal percentage and shooting efficiency respectively. Along with the tempo that they like to run they also allow a lot of tempo and a lot of points ranking 24th in the league in defensive scoring. This could be trouble tonight on the road against a very well coached balanced and veteran Memphis squad.

Memphis Grizzlies

The complete polar opposite of Houston would be Memphis as they average 99.6 points per game but they allow just 99.2 points per game which rank them third in the NBA. This will be a complete contrast of styles tonight and while Houston loves to get up and down the floor, Memphis is content with controlling the tempo as they average 84.6 attempts per game which rank 22nd in the NBA. Their offensive numbers are nothing to shout about as they rank as one of the lower shooting percentage teams in the NBA across the board.

However, on the other side of the ball is where I like them tonight as they rank first in the NBA allowing just 34.2 field goals made per game along with ranking second and third in opponent three-point and overall shooting percentage. Although facing Houston can be a daunting task this is a very well-coached team with a good veteran core that should the more than up to the challenge in keeping Houston in check. As well, there is some good plus money value to go ahead and back Memphis tonight.

Houston Rockets vs Memphis Grizzlies

Oddsmakers have come out making Memphis a +1 underdog at home versus Houston. For my NBA pick, I’m going to forgo the points and just take Memphis on the plus money line. Expect the Grizzlies to do enough to win this game with Houston in a tough spot coming off playing the Warriors.
