Very intriguing matchup Wednesday night on ESPN from Atlanta as two stellar rookies, the Mavericks’ Luka Doncic and Hawks’ Trae Young, meet for the first time.

The Dallas Mavericks probably won’t be a playoff team this season and the Atlanta Hawks figure to be terrible. However, their game Wednesday night in Hotlanta is must-see TV on ESPN in this writer’s opinion. That’s because it’s the first meeting as professionals between touted rookies Luka Doncic of the Mavs and Trae Young of the Hawks.

The careers of these two will forever be intertwined and compared because the Hawks could have had Doncic. However, Dallas traded up from No. 5 in the 2018 draft to Atlanta’s No. 3 spot by including a 2019 top-five protected first-round pick. The Mavs lusted after Doncic to pair with their other exciting young player Dennis Smith Jr.

Atlanta was just as high on Young, whom the Hawks knew would help sell tickets and bring needed buzz. Last year as a freshman at Oklahoma, Young became the first player in Division I history to lead the nation in both points (27.4) and assists (8.7) since assists became an official stat in the 1983-84 season.

This is Atlanta’s home opener as it traveled to the Knicks, Grizzlies and Cavaliers last week, with the Hawks getting that first W 133-111 in Cleveland on Sunday. Young as fabulous with 35 points and 11 assists, becoming the first rookie with at least 35 points and 10 helpers in a game since Steph Curry – a guy Young has been compared to. In the past 25 years, the only other rookies to accomplish the feat were LeBron James, Allen Iverson and Jason Kidd. The Hawks made a team-record 22 3-pointers.

Young is averaging 23.0 points, 8.3 assists and 3.3 rebounds. His scoring or passing were never in question. His propensity to turn the ball over and his defense were. Young has given it away only eight times so far, which is pretty darn good. Atlanta is pretty fun to watch because it can score (119.0 ppg) but can’t stop anyone (122.7 ppg).

Atlanta is a bit banged up right now with big men John Collins (left ankle) and Dewayne Dedmon (left ankle) both out.

Mavs Have Winning Record!

Dallas won a second straight Monday, 115-109 over visiting Chicago. Doncic did a little of everything with 19 points six assists and three rebounds. DeAndre Jordan became the first Dallas player in 24 years to start a season with three straight double-doubles, putting up 18 points and 16 rebounds. Even more shocking, he was 2-for-2 from the free-throw line! He's averaging 17 points, 12.7 rebounds and 2.3 blocks, shooting 70 percent from the floor and 90 percent from the line. Jordan has been laughably bad from the charity stripe in his career.

The Mavericks, who are over .500 for the first time since the end of the 2015-16 season, are missing three guys in starting forwards Harrison Barnes (right hamstring) and Dirk Nowitzki (left ankle) and backup point guard Devin Harris (hamstring). None of the three will play here, with Dirk out at least until the end of the month.

Just like Atlanta, the Mavs can score (118.3 ppg) but can’t stop anyone (122.0 ppg). The Hawks have won the past nine in this series, although both were close last year. Five of those wins have come in Atlanta.

  • Over is 17-4 in Hawks last 21 games after scoring more than 125 points in their previous game.
  • Over is 5-1 in Mavericks last 6 vs. a team with a losing straight up record.
  • Over is 5-2 in Mavericks last 7 after allowing 100 points or more in their previous game.

Not a huge opinion on the side here, but it should be a wildly entertaining game with both teams likely reaching the 120s. Go ‘over’ for a Wednesday NBA pick.
