The Houston Rockets visit the Boston Celtics Sunday afternoon, giving the ‘under’ an extra boost against the NBA odds.

Jason’s 2018-19 NBA picks record through Mar. 1:
16-14-1 ATS, 0-4 ML (minus-9.35 units), 18-9 Totals

Houston (37-25 SU, 27-33-2 ATS) at Boston (38-25 SU, 32-31 ATS)

Sunday, 3:30 p.m. ET
Free NBA Pick: Under
Best Line Offered: BetOnline

[/]{"component":"oddswidget", "eventId":3569959, "sportsbooksIds":[238,93,1096,19,999996], "LineTypeId":3, "PeriodTypeId":1}[/]

Sunday afternoons were made for sports – outdoor sports. Basketball is a game that should be played at night, but now that football season is well behind us, the NBA is loading up on these matinee games; Sunday’s matchup at the Garden between the Houston Rockets and Boston Celtics is one of four early games on the schedule. We’re recommending the ‘under’ for all four.

Unofficially, that is. We’re focussed on the Rockets-Celtics game for our NBA picks, but the power of the ‘under’ compels us. It’s just the right thing to do for these afternoon games, and even though both Houston (Over 34-27-1) and Boston (Over 35-28) have been pounding the ‘over’ this year, we’re sticking with the program here at the home office.

The Day-To-Day

The Rockets might even help us by keeping several players on the bench. All four of these gentlemen are listed as day-to-day:

Eric Gordon (minus-1.0 OBPM, minus-3.3 DBPM)

Gerald Green (minus-0.3 OBPM, minus-3.1 DBPM)

Kenneth Faried (plus-0.5 OBPM, minus-1.1 DBPM)

Iman Shumpert (minus-0.9 OBPM, plus-0.2 DBPM)

Taking both Gordon and Green out of the backcourt would definitely help us out. Alas, Gordon is listed as probable after sitting out one game with a sore knee, but Green has strep throat, so he’s doubtful. Likewise, Faried (hip) is probable and Shumpert (calf) is doubtful. Not ideal, since that means we’ll see more of Gordon and Austin Rivers (minus-0.8 OBPM, minus-2.1 DBPM). Maybe Gordon will prove less than mobile, assuming he plays.

[/]{"component": "embedHTML", "code": "

The Kyrie Irving effect pic.twitter.com/BrHxVYHQNR
— Shawn Palmer (@PalmerGuyBoston) 1 de março de 2019
\n"}[/]

I’m Contused

Unfortunately for us, the only injured player for Boston is Aron Baynes (minus-0.4 OBPM, plus-1.2 DBPM), but there’s a good chance he’ll return from his left foot contusion on Sunday. Meanwhile, the Celtics are fourth in the league in defensive efficiency at 103.8 points allowed per 100 possessions, and both they and Houston run pretty slow offenses – especially the Rockets. They should be even slower during this matinee affair.

Plus, the C’s are obviously not giving it their all these days. Their chemistry has been shot since Kyrie Irving wavered on his earlier insistence that he would pick up his option year in 2019-20. Let’s see, that “news” hit the Twittersphere on February 1... yup, the ‘under’ is 7-5 since then, including 4-1 in Boston’s last five games. Three of those games saw the Celtics fail to top the 100-point mark, something that had only happened four times prior this year.

We’re still waiting for the NBA odds to hit the board at press time, but given the start time for this matchup, Boston’s malaise and the likely absence of Gerald Green, we’ll take the ‘under’ for a small sum – and may the sphere be with you.
