The Orlando Magic and the New York Knicks have both been a little bit surprising so far this early season. Today we are going to look at the totals when Orlando travel to take on the defensive minded Grizzlies and New York hosts Houston.  Will these teams put up enough points to go over the totals?

Orlando at Memphis total (206)

Orlando has been putting up points at a premium averaging 116.9 per game which ranks second in the NBA. Surprisingly Memphis hasn’t been horrible on that end of the floor either averaging just over 100 points per game so this total of 206 looks just a little bit off to me. On closer examination though this could be a tough spot for Orlando to put up points like they have been facing a Memphis team that ranks first in the NBA allowing opponents to shoot just 39.9% from the field, as well as allowing just 32.7 field goals made per game which also ranks first. The point of contention tonight will be from beyond the arc where surprisingly Orlando is shooting 44% from distance which ranks first in the NBA. Don’t expect for them to light it up tonight against a Memphis team that allows opponents to shoot just 32.4% from range. Looking at the matchups and the pace I just have a hard time believing this is going to be an up-tempo affair with Memphis being at home most likely controlling the tempo. Currently, the Grizzlies rank second to last in the NBA averaging just 80 attempts per game and on the other end of the floor, they are allowing just 82 which ranks them sixth.

Houston at New York (total 212)

On paper, this looks like the right number considering that Houston has actually not pushed the tempo like we’re used to and New York has actually played some surprising defense this season. Currently, the Knicks are allowing opponents to shoot just 43.5% from the field which ranks them sixth in the NBA. What is more surprising than that, in my opinion, is the fact that Houston ranks right in the middle the league in most defensive categories and currently rank 16th in the league in opponent shooting efficiency and opponent field goals made per game. As well, neither team on average is lighting up the scoreboard with Houston averaging just 104.2points per game and New York just 102.8 ranking them 16th and 20th in the league respectively. On closer examination of their schedule though this actually makes some sense with Houston especially being that they have played some slower tempo teams or lower scoring teams in the league in Sacramento, Dallas, Memphis, and Charlotte. Don’t expect that same scenario tonight versus New York as this will be a really good matchup of two teams that should be able to make plenty of buckets against each other.
