Look For The Pelicans To Give Lebron & Company A Tough Battle

Pelicans player Anthony Davis

Just a couple of weeks ago the Cavaliers took care of the Pelicans 90-82 in Cleveland. Today they match up again in New Orleans and odds makers have made Lebron and company a decent road favorite. Can the Pelicans upset the Cavaliers?

Cleveland Cavaliers

Cleveland is coming off a very difficult loss to San Antonio but still remain the favorite to win the Eastern conference. In their last matchup versus New Orleans, they shot just 37.8% from the floor and a horrible 19.4% from distance. Fortunately for them, New Orleans wasn’t much better and only scored 13 points in the fourth quarter giving Cleveland the victory. I actually like how New Orleans matches up with this Cleveland team, though, and despite the fact, Cleveland is coming off a loss don’t expect New Orleans to just roll over.

Statistically, Cleveland remains one of the best offensive teams in the NBA averaging 109.3 points per game which ranks fifth, along with shooting 38.4% from distance which ranks them third. However, on the other side of the ball, they rank just outside the top half the league allowing opponents to shoot 50% on their two-point shots and 35.7% from distance which ranks them 18th and 19th respectively. I have a hard time believing they’re going to come into New Orleans and win this game going away.

New Orleans Pelicans

Like Cleveland, New Orleans is coming off a tough loss against Brooklyn. Unlike Cleveland, though they got absolutely crushed which was a bit shocking to them I am sure. Anthony Davis has been a little bit banged up but it looks like he is good to go for this matchup. On the season New Orleans has changed their approach quite a bit from last year by focusing more on the defensive side of the ball. This is not been very beneficial to them in the win column so far but that has a little bit to do with the fact they have had some injury issues.

Offensively there is not a lot to shout about but on the other side of the ball New Orleans ranks sixth in the NBA allowing opponents to shoot just 44.4% from the floor and they also rank seventh and eighth in opponent shooting efficiency and effective field-goal percentage. After getting blown out the other night expect a maximum effort from New Orleans and for them to play with a little bit of a chip on their shoulder possibly pulling the upset.

Cleveland Cavaliers vs New Orleans Pelicans

Oddsmakers have New Orleans as a +6.5 underdog at home and for my NBA pick, I will back them in the spot. I like how they match up with Cleveland and since they are at home I expect them to hang in this contest a bit tighter than previously in Cleveland. Don’t be shocked if they win straight up.
