The Denver Nuggets have been playing some real up-tempo basketball recently and tonight I believe they catch Utah in a tough spot. Surprisingly they have been made a small favorite but is there any value in backing the defensively tough Jazz?

Utah Jazz

Utah remains as one of the best defensive teams in the league and currently, are allowing opponents to shoot just 43.3% overall which ranks them second in the league. On top of that, they have been excellent at limiting tempo and overall opponent shooting percentages. Utah ranks first in the NBA in opponent effective field-goal percentage, opponent shooting efficiency, and opponent two points you percentage. The issue tonight for them I believe will be that they are matching up with a team that shoots really well from distance which is Utah’s Achilles’ heel.

The Jazz is allowing opponents to shoot 35.6% from beyond the arc which ranks them right in the middle of the league and far off from their other defensive percentages. On the other side of the ball Utah has some decent statistics but still, they rank 28th in the NBA and field goals made per game and are averaging just 99.7 points per game which rank them 26th. With them coming off the back to back this is a tough spot for them to come in and step things up against a Denver team that can really score at times.

Denver Nuggets

Denver is the complete opposite of Utah and that they really like to get up and down the floor and currently they are averaging 109.8 points per game which rank fourth in the NBA. If both teams were off of rest the advantage I believe would go to Utah, but Denver is catching them in a nice spot which is why oddsmakers have them as a small favorite. Percentage wise they have decent statistics across the board including shooting 46.2% overall which ranks them 10th in the NBA.

They also are shooting over 36% from distance which is Utah’s defensive weakness and could be an area they could excel at tonight. On the other side of the ball, they definitely struggle to allow opponents to shoot over 47% from the floor which ranks them second to last in the league. Across the board, their defensive statistics rank in the bottom five of the league, but again this is all about the spot and the fact that they can score. Utah is the better team but Denver wins tonight.

Utah Jazz vs Denver Nuggets

Oddsmakers have Denver as a -2 favorite across-the-board and for my NBA pick, I will back the Nuggets. Although Utah is the better team with the better record, Denver catches them in a tough position to win tonight. Look for Denver to come out with the victory by over five points.
