The New York Knicks Can Win Because…
Their confidence should be boosted after winning at the Los Angeles Lakers on Thursday night. The Knicks, relying on a lot of odd parts, were able to operate very efficiently on offense. The Knicks committed only eight turnovers against the Lakers. They hit 47 percent of their field goals and 50 percent of their threes, taking a reasonable amount of shots as well (18 threes in all, making nine of them). The Knicks weren’t afraid of taking the ball to the basket, either – they got 26 foul shots and made 20 of them. They assisted on 27 of 36 makes from the field, a 75-percent assist rate, which is exceptionally good and speaks to blended ball movement, a sign of a team that’s playing the right way, even if it doesn’t have the most talent. Golden State’s defense has to be beaten with strong ball movement. You can’t bluff your way past a good defensive team with hero-ball or solo efforts. The Knicks have the right approach at this time, and that can make them surprisingly competitive against the Warriors, even in Oakland.
The other thing to keep in mind is whether or not the Warriors will be resting anyone. On Friday, they rested Step Curry, Klay Thompson, Andrew Bogut and Andre Iguodala. They got spanked 114-103 in Denver as a result. If they’re resting again, the Knicks have a shot.
The Golden State Warriors Can Win Because…
They're a far better team, playing at home, and playing very well once again. The Warriors had been going through some bumps earlier in the past month of play, including on a long Eastern trip that wore them down at times. Golden State lost to Indiana and Brooklyn, and very nearly lost to Boston in a game it had trailed by more than 20 points. The Warriors needed to come home, and since doing so, they haven’t lost a game. The Warriors have cruised past several opponents, never being particularly extended by any of them or taken to the final possession. This team is getting balanced production which is why they are a double digit NBA odds favorite tonight. One night, Draymond Green is the leading scorer (versus the Los Angeles Clippers on March 8). One night, it’s Stephen Curry (March 9 at Phoenix). One night, it’s Klay Thompson (March 11 versus Detroit). This team is right where it wants to be, and the struggles of past weeks on the road have been turned into a relatively distant memory. The Warriors are still maintaining that plus-10-point differential, a sign of an elite team not just in one NBA season, but on a larger historical level. The Warriors are also 28-2 at home this season, so the idea that the Knicks can take them down is dubious at best. The Knicks are 3-7 in their last 10 and headed for a last-place finish in the Eastern Conference, unless Philadelphia does worse down the stretch.
The Warriors are miles better than the Knicks for all the reasons listed above. It isn’t really a close – or fair – comparison. As long as their starters are playing, take them with your NBA picks tonight.
