The Dallas Mavericks have completely dominated the Los Angeles Lakers the last few seasons beating them the last 13 straight times. They will try to make it 14 today and oddsmakers have made them a double-digit favorite in this spot. Can the Lakers stay within the number?

Los Angeles Lakers

Los Angeles has been playing listless basketball since the All-Star break but had a better effort the other night taking New Orleans to the wire. I’m a little bit surprised even with their recent poor play how big of an underdog they are in this spot. Statistically they are pretty bad across the board but they do rank in the middle of the league in field goals made per game and points in the paint. Defensively they are arguably the worst team in the NBA but they do defend from beyond the arc decently well which might help them keep this game reasonably close. I understand this is not a good basketball team but I think this is simply too many points to give them. The last time they were in Dallas they got absolutely blown out 122-73 so I think this game was probably circled on their calendar. The Lakers are a work in progress but expect a maximum effort from them tonight to keep this game a lot closer than odds makers anticipate.

Dallas Mavericks

Since the All-Star break Dallas is 4-2 and is slowly but surely turning their season around. They are on a decent two-game winning streak beating Memphis and Oklahoma respectively at home. However, despite playing some better basketball I just don’t see them winning this game in a blowout. Statistically speaking we are still talking about a Dallas team that averages just 97.9 points per game along with 36.4 field goals made per game both of which rank dead last in the NBA. Their best offensive statistic, shooting 35.6% from distance, should be mitigated at least a little bit against a Los Angeles team that actually defends that area decently well. Defensively Dallas does not allow opponents to get up-tempo but their overall defensive statistics are terrible. Currently, the Mavericks are allowing opponents to shoot 46.8% from the floor which ranks 26th in the NBA. They also rank 29th in defending from beyond the arc allowing opponents to shoot 38.1% which could be a problem tonight against a Los Angeles team that likes to shoot from range. Dallas should win this game but expect the Lakers to keep it somewhat interesting.

NBA Odds

Oddsmakers have made Dallas a -10 favorite across the board but for my NBA pick I will take the Lakers plus the points. Although it is tempting to back a Dallas team that is playing decently well on top of the fact that they blew out this same team a while back, I think the value is on Los Angeles.

Free NBA Pick: Lakers +10

Best Line Offered: at 5Dimes

[/]{"component":"oddswidget", "eventId":3068675, "sportsbooksIds":[19,1096,238,1389,274], "LineTypeId":1, "PeriodTypeId":1 }[/]
