On Christmas day the Los Angeles Lakers took advantage of a depleted Los Angeles Clippers team and beat their cross town rival for the first time in quite a while. The Clippers look to get revenge tonight and have been made a double-digit favorite at home. Can the Lakers hang in one more time?

Los Angeles Lakers

The Lakers have lost two games in a row and are currently averaging 104.7 points per game which ranks 18th in the NBA. Head coach Luke Walton has done a nice job with this team because they are real young across the board and statistically they have been better than most people predicted. Los Angeles is averaging 44.6 points in the paint which ranks eighth in the NBA and they are also shooting 35.4% from distance which ranks them in the middle of the league. They continue to try and push tempo and get teams into their type of pace which has been good and bad at times. The problem is on the other side of the ball because the pace they have allowed has also allowed opponents to average 110.3 points per game which ranks them 26th and defensive scoring. Their defensive numbers across the board are really bad as they allow opponents to shoot 47.9% from the field and 53.4% on their two-point shots both of which rank them dead last in the NBA. Despite their defensive woes I like the makeup of this team and I believe they can hang within the number against the Clippers.

Los Angeles Clippers

Los Angeles has won five games in a row after losing six games in a row so they seem to be back on track. However in their winning streak they played four teams with losing records in Phoenix, Sacramento, Miami, and Orlando. Without Blake Griffin they are just a little bit different and although I expect them to win this game and get their revenge from Christmas I don’t think they will win by double digits. Statistically the Clippers have been good across the board on both sides of the ball as they are shooting 46.5% from the field and allowing opponents to shoot just 44.1% ranking them seventh and fifth respectively in the league. However, they’re only averaging 38.9 field goals made for game which ranks them right in the middle of the league and they do allow quite a bit of tempo from their opponents. Most likely they will keep their current winning streak intact but the Lakers can be pretty scrappy at time so expect them to play some inspired basketball and keep this game surprisingly close.

NBA Odds

Oddsmakers opened with the Los Angeles Clippers of -10.5 favorite across the board. For my NBA pick I’m going to back the Los Angeles Lakers getting the points though as I expect them to stay within double digits. Clippers get their revenge but the Lakers stays within the number.
