Faried produced at a high level with the Rockets, averaging 12.9 points, 8.2 rebounds and 1.1 blocks in 24.4 minutes over 25 games (13 starts) in the regular season but he saw his playing time decrease significantly in the playoffs.
Kenneth Faried averaged just 4.0 points and 3.5 rebounds in 9.3 minutes over six playoff games but he can be a valuable frontcourt piece in Los Angeles.
The 29-year-old would be a reliable backup option at either the power forward or center position. He may lack pure height but throughout his career, he has made up for it with his physical attributes and high-energy on the court.
Current Lakers Roster & Starting Lineup
*Notates expected starter
C: DeMarcus Cousins*, JaVale McGee
PF: Anthony Davis*, Talen Horton-Tucker
SF: Kyle Kuzma*, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Jared Dudley
SG: Danny Green*, Troy Daniels, Avery Bradley
PG: LeBron James*, Rajon Rondo, Quinn Cook, Alex Caruso
Faried would not play 19.7 minutes per game as he did with the Rockets in the regular season but DeMarcus Cousins and JaVale McGee have some injury concerns, especially Cousins and having another big man adding depth makes sense because this roster is loaded with guards and small forwards.
How would Faried fit with this new-look Lakers? The Morehead State product is a strong screen setter and underrated rim roller and last season he improved his 3-point shot, knocking 7 of 20 attempts from beyond the arc with the Rockets.
No one should expect him to attempt long-range shots on a regular basis but defenses now know that he can make shots from downtown from time to time so there will be more space on the floor when he plays. He may get more playing time elsewhere but this is a good fit for him. The Lakers only brought back six players from last season and this new version of the team has more shooting, defense and experience.
