After an upset win over their cross-town rivals the Lakers stay at home to take on the Jazz tonight. Because of their recent struggles, they remain a solid home underdog, but is there any way Los Angeles can take this game to the wire?

Utah Jazz

Utah is 18-13 on the season and rank as one of the best defensive teams in the NBA. The last time they visited Los Angeles they came away with a 107-101 victory, but oddsmakers have made this line a little bit tighter and I think for good reason. Utah is averaging 99.1 points per game which rank them 24th in the NBA, however, they’ve been really efficient shooting 46.6% from the field and 36.2% from distance, raking them sixth and eighth in the NBA respectively. The main reason for their lack of a higher scoring average is the fact that they get up just 77.2 attempts for game which ranks dead last in the NBA, for them it’s all about getting stops and playing great defense.  On closer look at their statistics that rings true as they rank first in the NBA in both opponent shooting efficiency and effective field-goal percentage. However, they don’t defend from beyond the arc particularly well allowing opponents to shoot 36% from distance which could be a point of contention tonight against a Lakers team that likes to shoot the three.  This line seems about right, but Los Angeles has some nice pieces and I believe after their win on Christmas they will come into this game with some confidence and give Utah all they want.

 Los Angeles Lakers

The Lakers broke a tough losing streak by getting a win on Christmas versus the personnel-depleted Los Angeles Clippers. Although the Clippers were not at full strength it was a good second half Los Angeles which should give them some momentum to take on a very stingy defense in Utah. Offensively the Lakers have been fine averaging 104.5 points per game and ranking in the middle of the league in most offensive statistics including getting up 86.9 attempts for game and making 38.7 of those ranking them eighth and 14th in the NBA respectively. The issue for them has been on the other side of the ball where they simply have not been getting it done, raking dead last in allowing opponents to shoot 47.8% from the field. All that being said, though, Utah although efficient, is not an offensive juggernaut and with the Lakers being at home and hanging with them the last time they met I like for them to do the same tonight so I will grab the points.

NBA Odds

Oddsmakers have made Los Angeles a +4.5 underdog across the board and for my NBA pick I will take the points. Expect Utah to be a little sluggish coming out of the break and for the Lakers to be a little bit sharper tonight.
