Lakers Center DeMarcus Cousins Suffers Knee Injury

According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski: “Lakers center DeMarcus Cousins has suffered a possible knee injury and will undergo further testing today in Los Angeles, league sources tell ESPN. Cousins was working out in Las Vegas on Monday when he had to leave the court, sources said. He signed a one-year deal in July.”

Cousins signed a one-year, $3.5 million contract with the Lakers. Per Spotrac, the deal is for even less than what he got from the Warriors last season when he made $5.3 million.

Signing DeMarcus Cousins was clearly a risky bet for the Lakers but taking a chance on hum being a dominant interior force again like he was before all his injuries is worth it because he agreed to a veteran’s minimum deal.

The 29-year-old center was coming off a torn Achilles injury suffered on the latter part of the 2017-18 season while he was with the Pelicans and he returned in time to play 30 regular season games for the Warriors last season, averaging 16.3 points, 8.2 rebounds, 3.6 assists, 1.5 blocks and 1.3 steals in 25.7 minutes. Cousins partially tore his quad in the second game of their first round series against the Clippers but he returned in time to play in the NBA Finals.

If this new injury proves to be substantial, it could be the third major one for Cousins in around one-and-a-half years, which would be concerning for his long-term future. He was expected to enter the season healthy and improve his stock heading into free agency next year while helping the Lakers make a deep run in the playoffs.

*Update: Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium just reported that Cousins has suffered a torn ACL in his knee. Per Charania, the four-time NBA All-Star “will undergo final tests that are expected to confirm the torn ACL diagnosis.”
