An old rivalry is renewed on Tuesday night, as the Lakers head into Madison Square Garden to play the New York Knicks. With injuries accounted for, the NBA Odds have the Knicks as -3½ favorites in this one, but it’s the total that looks to hold the value tonight.

L.A. Lakers vs New York Knicks

The Lakers have started the season pretty impressively on defense. However, things are starting to regress back to the norm with them lately. Los Angeles has allowed nearly 113 points per game over their last five games, and they are giving up almost 109 points per game on the season.

Part of this is due to their pace, which is the fastest in the league. However, while Los Angeles has a nice collection of guard and wing defenders, their lack of a defensive post presence really hurts their interior defense.

With Tim Hardaway Jr. still out for the Knicks, all they’ll do tonight is work Kristaps Porzingis and Enes Kanter down low and bully the Lakers. Even though Los Angeles’ defensive metrics are top 10 in most categories to start the season, I’m not buying into it just yet on this long East Coast road swing.

While I don’t buy into this a lot, the over is 24-17 since 1996 in this series, and it cashed in both of their meetings last year. Furthermore, the Lakers are the worst team in the league, giving up nearly 50 points in the paint per game this season.

I see the Knicks attacking all night against the soft underbelly of the Lakers’ defense, and making this one a high scoring affair on both sides.
