An old rivalry will be renewed on Wednesday, as the Celtics host the Lakers in what should be one of the more entertaining games on the slate. The NBA oddsmakers have the Celtics as an -8 ½ favorite, with a total that is currently sitting anywhere from 210 to 212 points.

Lakers vs. Celtics

Both of these teams are having solid starts to the year, but while the Celtics may have lost one of their best players for the season, both of these teams are discovering they have some star talents that are either still teenagers, or barely 20 years old.

That has led to both teams being quick and hungry on the defensive end, and with the Lakers struggling some overall on offense, that leaves some room for us to take advantage in the NBA Odds.

For one, the sportsbooks not being able to decide on a total in this one is my first clue, and I think we’ll be able to exploit it. The C’s are one of the best young defensive teams in the league right now, and they are going to slow down the Lakers as much as possible tonight.

Teams coming into the Garden are shooting just 44.1%, and the C’s have so far actually been better overall, allowing teams just a 42.9% shooting clip on the year. That has led to their defense allowing just 98.2 points per 100 possessions, which is tops in the league.

The Lakers, on the other hand, have been pretty good on that end of the court as well. They are allowing only 102.8 points per 100 possessions, which ranks 5th-best right now. They also rank in the top 10 in their opponent’s effective field goal percentage, which the Celtics also lead right now.

Simply put, if the C’s are successful in slowing this game down, the under is going to be the play, especially with sportsbooks like BetOnline and Heritage putting the total at 212 right now.

The Lakers have played five teams this season with paces of 98.7 possessions per game or slower, and the under is 4-1 in those games. I see both coaches gearing their guys up to renew this rivalry properly tonight, which means the defenses will be in attendance. My NBA pick for this game will be 'Under'.
